Paul's Heroics Lift Kernels to Extra-Inning Win

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAVENPORT, IOWA - With two outs and two runners aboard in the top of the 10th, Chris Paul delivered an RBI single to score LaMonte Wade and lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 3-2 victory in 10 innings Sunday against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park.

Paul went 4-for-5 in Sunday's contest, scoring one run and driving in the winning run with his 10th-inning single. River Bandits center fielder Kyle Tucker made an unsuccessful diving effort to catch Paul's line drive, and Wade scored the decisive run.

After back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 10th, Zander Wiel and Jermaine Palacios teamed up for a 3-6-3 double play to get two big outs. With potential game-tying run Osvaldo Duarte at third base, Nick Anderson struck out Dexture McCall and secured the victory. Anderson improved to 1-0 this season with the win while Ralph Garza took the loss, dropping to 0-1.

Kernels left-hander Sam Clay and River Bandits southpaw Matt Bower matched zeroes over the first five innings. Defense helped Clay get through a jam in the fifth when J.J. Fernandez threw out Anthony Hermelyn at home plate to end the inning.

Cedar Rapids (4-0) and Quad Cities (0-4) traded runs in the sixth inning to break into the scoreless deadlock. Rafael Valera led off the top of the sixth with a double and later scored on a single from Max Murphy. The River Bandits answered in the home half of the sixth with an RBI groundout by Kyle Tucker that brought in Antonio Nunez to tie the game at 1-1.

In the ninth inning, the Kernels scored the go-ahead run before the River Bandits drew level and forced extra innings. Paul scored from third base on a two-out throwing error for a 2-1 lead, but a leadoff triple from Pat Porter set up Hermelyn for a game-tying single that eventually pushed the game into the 10th inning and set the stage for Paul's game-winning hit.

Up next, Cedar Rapids travels to the Kane County Cougars for a three-game road series. Monday's opener is set for 6:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with Kernels right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) expected to face Cougars right-hander Justin Donatella (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
