Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers received a late goal from Jeremy Ebobisse, battling back to secure a point with a 1-1 draw against Orlando City SC in front of 25,218 fans at Providence Park on Thursday night. Ebobisse recorded his sixth goal of the season, while Brian Fernandez tallied his first career assist for the Timbers and Jorge Moreira notched his second assist of the 2019 campaign.

Recent form

With the draw, Portland (7-8-4, 25pts) extended its unbeaten streak to five games across all competitions, with a record of 3-0-2. Additionally, the Timbers are unbeaten in their last five home matches across all competitions at Providence Park (3-0-2). Portland has outscored its opponents 12-3 in its last five home matches.

Shots advantage

Portland finished the match with a 26-2 advantage in shots, the largest shot differential for the Timbers in an MLS match. The two shots allowed are the fewest shots ever by a Timbers MLS opponent and tied for the fewest shots by an MLS team this season. The Timbers held Orlando City without a shot in the second half, marking the first time an opponent has not attempted a shot against Portland in a half of an MLS match.

Against Eastern Conference opponents

The Timbers are 4-2-1 against Eastern Conference teams in 2019. Dating back to the conclusion of the 2018 season, Portland has posted a record of 6-2-2 in its last 10 matches against the Eastern Conference. Notably, the Timbers are unbeaten in their last 15 home matches (8-0-7) against Eastern Conference sides, dating back to the 2016 season.

Goal tally

Ebobisse scored his sixth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead with Fernandez. The goal in the 82nd minute was the latest game-tying goal by a Timbers player since Diego Valeri also scored in the 82nd minute against the Houston Dynamo on June 26, 2016. Additionally, Ebobisse is the second player this season to score as a substitute after Fernandez accomplished this feat on May 15 against Houston.

Key plays

Portland created the first chance of the match in the 13th minute. Sebastián Blanco dribbled down the left side of the field to the end line and played a diagonal ball across the box toward the penalty spot. Orlando City attempted to clear the ball, but it landed at the edge of the box for Cristhian Paredes, who unleashed a powerful strike that went just over the crossbar.

Remaining on the front foot, Diego Chara dribbled up the field and played the ball out wide on the left to Blanco, who slotted a pass to Valeri at the top of the box. Valeri sent a curling strike toward the goal that went just wide of the right post in the 23rd minute.

With the Timbers controlling a spell of possession in the 37th minute, Zarek Valentin played the ball to Blanco running down the middle of the field. Blanco quickly passed the ball out to Valeri on the left side; Valeri then floated a cross into the center of the box for Blanco, who jumped and sent a looping header over the outstretched arms of Orlando goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh, but the shot bounced off the crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, Valentin received the ball at the edge of the box and played a quick back-heel pass to Valeri, who delivered a pass to Fernandez inside the box. Fernandez turned and fired a shot on goal, forcing a diving stop by Ranjitsingh as he parried the attempt away.

Orlando City took a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. Robinho picked up a bouncing ball along the right sideline and dribbled to the edge of the box, playing a ball across the face of the goal. The ball deflected off a Timbers player and bounced to Santiago Patiño, who converted from near the penalty spot.

In first-half stoppage time, Valeri delivered a corner kick into the center of the box and Claude Dielna jumped, sending a header from close range just over the crossbar.

Portland came close to leveling the match in the 78th minute. Valeri served a free kick from the top of box that was initially cleared by Orlando City. Moreira played the ball back into the box and Dielna connected with a header that went just past the left post.

The Timbers tied the match at 1-1 in the 82nd minute. On the counter-attack, Moreira received the ball out wide on the right side and delivered a cross into the center of the box. Fernandez flicked the ball on to Ebobisse, who deposited a header into the back of the net from close range.
