Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used a strong outing from Michael Bowden combined with a 12-hit attack from the offense to blank the Syracuse Chiefs 3-0 Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Making just his third start after opening the season in the Tides bullpen, Bowden (3-1) continued his dominance as a starter as he allowed three hits over a season-high 5.2 shutout innings. He struck out five and walked two, and he's yet to allow a run in 16.0 innings as a starter this season.
The scoreless outing lowered Bowden's ERA to 0.95 (3 ER, 28.1 IP) in May - 2nd-best in the International League. In his three outings as a starter, he's held opposing batters to a .182 average (10-55) with 14 strikeouts.
Patrick McCoy followed Bowden's effort with three scoreless innings of relief before giving way to Cesar Cabral, who retired Dan Butler on a flyout with the bases loaded in the ninth to register his second save of the season.
The shutout was Norfolk's league-leading eighth of the year and helped lower the Tides team ERA to 2.83 - 2nd-best in the International League. The Tides are now 8-0 in games decided by a shutout this season.
Chris Parmelee had three hits to help pace Norfolk's 12-hit attack, while Nolan Reimold added two singles and a run scored. Reimold's two hits upped his hitting streak to seven games, over which he's batted .542 (13-24).
Michael Almanzar and Audry Perez each had RBI singles, while Dariel Alvarez singled and plated a run with a sacrifice fly. With the win, Norfolk (26-21) moved five games over the .500 mark, matching its highwater point of the 2015 campaign.
The Tides go for the four-game sweep of the Chiefs Thursday afternoon, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 12:05. Elih Villanueva (1-1, 5.23) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Bruce Billings (1-3, 4.10).
