The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-29) dropped a 4-1 decision to the Gwinnett Braves (21-25) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Braves' Wil Nieves cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Braves a 4-1 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
LHP Joely Rodriguez (2-4) took the loss for the Pigs as he allowed four runs on five hits while walking three over six innings of work.
Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the third as Mycal Jones drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and later scored on Jose Peraza's two-out, RBI single.
The IronPigs quickly answered that run in the top of the fourth as Cody Asche (1-2, R) started the inning with a single and the next batter, Domonic Brown (1-3, RBI) plated Asche with an RBI double to left to tie things at one apiece for the time being.
RHP Sugar Ray Marimon (3-2) earned the win for the G-Braves as he allowed one run on three hits to go along with two walks and seven strikeouts over 6.0 IP. RHP Aaron Kurcz (1.0 IP, H, 2 K) notched his sixth save of the season by tossing a scoreless top of the seventh.
The two teams will play a doubleheader again on Thursday with first pitch of game one at 5:05 p.m. RHP Phillippe Aumont (2-1, 1.64) gets the ball in game one for the Pigs against Gwinnett LHP Manny Banuelos (3-0, 2.64). In game two, it will be IronPigs RHP Jason Berken (3-2, 4.29) against a pitcher TBD for the Braves.
