Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights fell to the Columbus Clippers 9-3 to snap a three-game winning streak after a seven-run outburst by the Clips offense in the top of the fourth inning proved to be enough support for RHP Toru Murata.
Clippers first baseman Zach Walters broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth with a lead-off home run off of Knights starter Shawn Haviland. The homer was the start of a five-hit, seven-run inning in which Walters also completed the scoring with an RBI-double that scored Tyler Holt for the seventh run of the frame. Only two of the seven runs would be earned, but Haviland would still be saddled with the loss in his first start since May 1.
Jason Coats would put the Knights on the 'board in the bottom of the fifth inning with his second home run of the season - a solo shot to left-center field. The Texas native raised his batting average to .298 with the two-for-four outing, and has clubbed two home runs in his last four games.
The Knights cut the lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning when Micah Johnson doubled to lead off the frame and later came in to score on a Neftali Soto single off of Murata. The Clippers starter would earn his third win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits over 7.0 inning pitched.
Knights reliever Jarrett Casey was impressive after relieving Haviland with two outs in the fourth inning, spinning 3.1 innings of scoreless ball and allowing only four hits while striking out a season-high five batters. Casey's 3.1 innings pitched set a game-high for a Knights reliever this season, while his five punch-outs also tied Eric Surkamp and Maikel Cleto for the highest single-game total by a reliever.
Giovanny Urshela pushed the Clippers lead to 9-2 in the top of the ninth inning with his second long ball of the season, a two-run shot off of LHP Onelki Garcia.
Trayce Thompson completed the scoring when he drove in Soto with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to cut the Clippers lead to 9-3.
The Knights and Clippers will conclude their four-game series on Thursday with another 7:05 p.m. first pitch scheduled. RHP Junior Guerra will take the mound for the Knights as they try to capture the four-game series victory on Thirsty Thursday, presented by Hickory Tavern.
