Durham Bulls News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Durham shortstop Miles Mastrobuoni clubbed two hits while driving in two runs as five relievers combined for five scoreless frames, however Norfolk starting pitcher Kyle Bradish tossed six quality innings, in addition to third baseman Tyler Nevin and second baseman Rylan Bannon both homering and combining to drive in four runs in the Tides' 5-4 win over the Bulls on Friday evening at Harbor Park.
Norfolk jumped ahead early with a pair of solo home runs in the opening frame from Bannon and Nevin. That advantage increased to 5-0 in the subsequent inning courtesy of Bannon's two-run single before a double steal from the Tides brought across the fifth score. Durham would claw back with a three-run third highlighted by Mastrobuoni's RBI single and 2B Isaac Paredes's run-scoring double off the left field wall to make it 5-3. That deficit would later narrow to one on Mastrobuoni's RBI single in the seventh. The Bulls would threaten again in the eighth with the first two batters reaching base and put the tying run on third in the ninth, however were unable to further erase the deficit.
Nevin (3-4, R, 2 2B, HR, RBI) posted a game-high three hits, with Bannon (2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI) adding a multi-hit effort as well. Mastrobuoni (2-5, R, 2 RBI) was the only Bulls batter to record two or more knocks. Paredes's double gives him hits in all but two games with Durham, while he has also reached base in 13 of 14 contests with the Bulls.
Bradish (6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, ER, BB, 8 K), the reigning International League Pitcher of the Week, earned the victory after yielding three runs on four hits, adding eight strikeouts in six innings pitched, while reliever Cole Uvila notched the save. Durham starter Tommy Romero (3.0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K) suffered the defeat, as Dalton Moats (1.0 IP, 2 H, K), Calvin Faucher (1.0 IP, H, 3 K), Joel Peguero (1.0 IP, BB, K), Christopher Gau (1.0 IP, H, K) and Adrian De Horta (1.0 IP, 2 K) combined for the final five scoreless innings.
The two teams are slated to square off again on Saturday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. LHP Zac Lowther (0-1, 6.00) is expected to start for Norfolk, while Durham's starter has not yet been announced.
Following their six-game set in Norfolk, the Bulls return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 26 to start a six-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds. First pitch of the series opener is set for 11:05am. Tickets for that game and all remaining 2022 home dates can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com/tickets.
