St. Paul Saints News Release
TOLEDO, OH - The St. Paul Saints went 2-20 with runners in scoring position. They walked seven Toledo Mud Hens. They left 14 men on base. And they allowed a franchise record seven stolen bases. None of that matter as they scored six runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the Mud Hens 9-4 on Friday night at Fifth Third Field and improved to 10-5 on the season.
With the Saints trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth the Saints put up a six spot on only three hits. They loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning from Daniel Robertson, Jermaine Palacios, and José Godoy. Royce Lewis walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at four. With one out, back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to Jose Miranda and Mark Contreras gave the Saints a 6-4 lead. Curtis Terry then hit a grounder to third, but John Valente's throw to second went into left field as two runs scored putting the Saints up 8-4. A walk to Derek Fisher loaded the bases and Robertson was hit by a pitch to force in the final run.
The Saints struck first in the first as Lewis led off with a line drive single to center. Jake Cave snapped an 0-17 skid with a double into the left field corner sending Lewis to third. Jose Miranda made it 1-0 with a sacrifice lineout to left. Cave finished the game 3-6 with a double.
The lead didn't last long as the Mud Hens answered in the bottom of the inning. Zack Short led off with a walk and, two batters later, Jamie Westbrook hit a two-run homer over the left field wall, his second of the season, giving the Mud Hens a 2-1 lead.
The Saints got a long ball of their own in the third as Contreras drilled a solo homer to right, his fourth of the season, tying the game at two. Terry then reached on a two base throwing error by the third baseman Valente. A single by Fisher sent Terry to third. A wild pitch scored Terry as the Saints retook the lead 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth the Mud Hens regained the lead as Jacob Robson singled to left with one out. Jack López reached on an infield single putting runners at first and second. A double steal moved the runners up 90 feet, but JC Ramírez fanned Valente. Jake Petricka took over for Ramírez and walked Short to load the bases. Kody Clemens then singled home two giving the Mud Hens a 4-3 lead.
The Saints bullpen was tremendous tossing 5.1 scoreless innings as Jake Petricka (1.1 IP), Trevor Megill (1.0 IP), Tyler Bashlor (1.0 IP), and Yennier Cano (2.0 IP) did the job.
The same two teams meet in game five of the six-game series on Saturday evening at 4:05 p.m. (CT). The Saints send RHP Chi Chi González (2-0, 2.35) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Nivaldo Rodriguez (0-0, 0.63). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
