Tides Fall to Jacksonville Late to Split Series

After the Norfolk Tides won their last game 7-2 over Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on September 14, they then lost their next game 7-3 against the Jumbo Shrimp on the 15th. The Tides started off strong but gave up seven runs off nine hits. The Tides had eight hits themselves but were unable to get anything going after leaving twelve on base.
The first inning showcased both teams pitching and defensive capabilities as they both were able to hold each other. The Jumbo Shrimp had Brian Miller on after a walk, but a steal and an advance by ground out put him at third with one out, but the Tides held strong. Tides starter Ofelky Peralta struck out the next two batters to bring the Tides up to bat for the bottom half of the inning. Tides second baseman Rylan Bannon and catcher Adley Rutschman were both walked with no outs, but three straight Tides batters were retired to put an end to the 1st inning.
The Tides got their first hit in the third inning, with a double by Mason McCoy. It was McCoy's 18th double, which tied him with Tyler Nevin, for most doubles on the team. Adley Rutschman hit his second triple for the Tides this year, to bring McCoy in from second. Rutschman has hit triples in his last two games. With Rutschman on third, Kyle Stowers singled, scoring the last run of the inning, as the Tides went up 2-0 over the Jumbo Shrimp.
Monte Harrison, leader of the Jumbo Shrimp in home runs, hit his 14th on the year. He hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game. He is the only batter on the Jumbo Shrimp hitting double-digit home runs. This was his fifth home run in September through 11 games; this is the fastest he has reached five home runs in a month all season. The Jumbo Shrimp and the Tides were tied at 2-2 entering the sixth inning.
The Jumbo Shrimp were able to take the lead in the seventh inning after four straight hits to start off the inning. Miller singled to start the Jumbo Shrimp off, he got his second stolen base of the game advancing to second. Miller scored the leading run for the Jumbo Shrimp after a double by Nick Fortes. With Fortes on second and a single by Harrison, the Jumbo Shrimp are able to bring in three more runs, after a home run by left fielder Dustin Fowler. The Tides allowed four hits and four runs before recording an out in the inning. Lorenzo Quintana hit his own home run, a solo hit left, for the third home run of the game for the Jumbo Shrimp. The Jumbo Shrimp went up 7-2 after a five run seventh inning.
The Tides hit a home run in the ninth inning with two outs, in hopes of making a comeback, but unfortunately were unable to come back. Robert Neustrom hit a fly to right center field to bring the Tides with four. The Tides would go on to lose 7-3, after allowing a five-run inning by the Jumbo Shrimp.
Adley Rutschman hit his second triple in back-to-back games after hitting his first triple for the Tides in his last game on September 14. Rutschman came into the game leading the team in batting average with people in scoring position. He hit .400 (8-for-20) with runners in scoring position with 10 RBI. The next best person on the team close to his average is recently acquired left fielder Willy Yahn, who averages .282 with runners in scoring position.
Ofelky Peralta finished the game with a no decision after 4.1 innings pitched, after eight strikeouts, three walks, four hits, two runs, and a home run. After only giving up three home runs with Double-A Bowie earlier this year, Peralta gave up his seventh home run in eight starts with the Tides. He threw for his Tides season-high, 94 pitches. With over 60% of those pitches being strikes it was no wonder, Peralta was one strikeout away from tying his season-high.
The Tides finished with three batters having multi-hit games, but it wasn't enough as they were unable to hold the Jumbo Shrimp as they went off in the seventh. The Tides are now 1-1 in this six game homestand against the Jumbo Shrimp. The next Tides game will be on Thursday, September 16 with a 12:05 p.m. start for game three in the series.
