July 7, 2021 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Second baseman Jahmai Jones launched his fourth home run of the year - extending his on-base streak to 25 games in the process - and shortstop Mason McCoy added an RBI double, but the Tides (23-30) lost the second game of their six-game set with the Durham Bulls by an 11-2 final on Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Durham jumped out to a 1-0 lead just two pitches into the game, after leadoff hitter Dalton Kelly lifted a fly ball to into the breeze in center field that carried over the fence. The Bulls added another run in the first inning on an RBI single, then scored three more in the second inning on a three-run homer from catcher Rene Pinto.
Tides starter Mickey Jannis (4.0IP, 9H, 6ER, BB, 2K) allowed more than two earned runs for the first time this year. Jannis, who made his Major League debut with the Orioles in late June, started his third game of the season on Wednesday after beginning 2021 as a bullpen arm.
In the bottom of the second, McCoy followed a one-out double by Norfolk third baseman Rylan Bannon with a two-bagger of his own to cut the deficit to four runs. One inning later, Jones crushed a solo home run to left field to make it a 5-2 game, extending his team season-high on-base streak to 25 games in the process. Jones, who has posted a .449 on-base percentage in 24 games since returning from the injured list in early June, finished the game with two hits.
The Bulls piled on a total of five more runs over the next three innings, capped off by a four-run sixth inning. Kelly and third baseman Kevin Padlo each contributed an RBI double to extend Durham's lead.
Durham pitchers Phoenix Sanders, Brent Honeywell Jr. and Louis Head finished off the Tides by throwing a total of four hitless innings in relief of starter Dietrich Enns.
Right-hander Kyle Bradish will start for Norfolk tomorrow night in game three of the series, with fellow righty Shane Baz expected to take the ball for Durham (38-17). First pitch at Harbor Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
