Bisons Rally Comes up a Run Short 4-3 against Rochester
July 7, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
A Blake Swihart grand slam was enough to sink the Buffalo Bisons as they dropped game two of their series against the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 on Tuesday night at Frontier Field.
Buffalo got on the board first as Riley Adams jump started the offense in the third driving home Nash Knight and Breyvic Valera with a bloop single into center field. The Herd generated four hits in the innings after being held hitless the first two frames to take the lead 2-0.
Rochester flipped the script in the bottom half of the third striking for two bloop singles and an infield single before Swihart emptied the bases on a 388 foot long ball to left field. The blast was Zach Logue's second home run he has surrendered this season and gave Rochester a 4-2 lead.
Logue made the start for Buffalo and his night was over after just three innings and 67 pitches. The crafty lefty had an uncharacteristic start surrendering four runs on five hits and striking out just three to earn his first loss of the year. Coming into Wednesday's start Logue had allowed five runs in 16.2 innings, his shortest outing lasting 4.2 innings.
Luckily for the Herd and manager Casey Candaele they were able to turn to his bullpen with the second best ERA in the Triple-A Northeast, 3.25.
The Buffalo bullpen rescued the team from an uncharacteristic outing by Logue keeping the team in the game until the end. Casey Lawrence, Joel Payamps, newly-listed MLB rehabber Ryan Borucki, Dany Jimenez and Travis Bergan combined to hold the Red Wings to three hits and no runs over the final six innings.
Adams came up with another RBI in the eighth grounding into a fielder's choice to driving home Valera again to cut the lead to 4-3.
Adams has made his presence felt hitting out of the designated hitter spot in the lineup collecting a hit in each of his first two starts since returning to the Buffalo Monday after a three week stint the Toronto Blue Jays. His three RBIs were his first since returning to the Herd and brought his season total to 11.
However, the Buffalo offense continued to shuffle all game collecting seven hits and producing just four runners in scoring position opportunities. Sterling Sharp started for the Red Wings and limited the Buffalo offense for the second consecutive night allowing two runs on four hits over six innings and tying a career high for strikeouts with eight.
The Bisons (32-22) will look to retake their advantage in the series after splitting the first two at Frontier Field. Lefty MLB rehabber Tommy Milone is expected to make the start for the Herd opposite Rochester's lefty Ben Braymer. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
