Redbirds Fall in Extras at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The Memphis Redbirds lost a heartbreaker at the Louisville Bats (Triple-A affiliate, Cincinnati Reds) by a 4-3 final in 10 innings on Wednesday night. The game was briefly delayed by 15 minutes due to rain prior to first pitch.

Early on, Memphis (21-35) looked in line for victory. The Redbirds took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning via two home runs from Juan Yepez (a solo home run in the first and a two-run shot in the sixth) and solid starting pitching from Jake Woodford. The righthander allowed just one earned run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work, along with two walks and two strikeouts.

However, once the eighth inning began, the game began to unravel for Memphis. First, they left the bases loaded in the eighth. Then, Louisville (23-32) scratched across a run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Jose Barrero. In the ninth, the Redbirds left the bases loaded again, and the Bats took advantage. Mark Payton lined a solo home run over the left-field fence on the second pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the game into extra innings.

In extra innings, Memphis failed to score in the top of the 10th, setting the stage for Louisville in the bottom of the 10th. The Bats finished off their dramatic comeback when TJ Friedl lined a single into center field, scoring Scott Heineman and sending the crowd home happy.

Ali Sánchez had one heck of a night at the plate, going 3-5 with a double. The catcher now has hits in each of his last nine games for the Redbirds. Conner Capel and Kramer Robertson each reached three times in the ballgame (two walks, single).
