Tides Fall Despite Alvarez's Big Day
July 1, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Pedro Ãlvarez homered and drove in three, but the Tides dropped a slugfest to the Durham Bulls 8-6 on a balmy Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Ãlvarez blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning high off the right field scoreboard for his first homer with the Tides this season. He later added a sacrifice fly in the sixth frame, giving him a .291 average with nine RBI in seven games since he joined the Tides from Baltimore on June 25th.
After trailing the contest 4-0 and 5-4, Norfolk rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run single by Joey Rickard. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Bulls struck for three runs in the eighth inning to reclaim the lead. Suffolk native Brandon Lowe once again paced the Durham attack, as his two-run double with two outs in the eighth gave the Bulls an 8-6 advantage.
Lowe, who attended Nansemond River High School and the University of Maryland, finished the four-game series 9-for-17 with two home runs, three doubles, five walks and eight runs batted in.
Jaime Schultz (2-1) earned the win for Durham, while Ruben Alaniz worked the final two frames to earn his second save of the season.
Norfolk starter Asher Wojciechowski did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on six hits over four-plus innings of work. He struck out three but issued a season-high five walks in the contest while needing 99 pitches to navigate his outing. Joely Rodriguez (4-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in the eighth inning.
The Bulls won all four games of the series at Harbor Park, moving them a season-high 5.5 games ahead of Norfolk in the IL South division.
The Tides will continue their season-long homestand on Monday, welcoming the Charlotte Knights to town for a two-game set. John Means (3-1, 3.89) is set to make the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Spencer Adams (0-2, 4.43), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
Notes: Prior to Sunday's contest, RHP Jimmy Yacabonis and RHP Yefry Ramirez were activated to Norfolk's roster after being optioned from Baltimore...Norfolk has made 23 roster moves since the homestand started on Monday...DJ Stewart singled in the sixth inning and has now reached base safely in 18 consecutive games...Adrian Marin doubled, singled and scored two runs...Infielder Luis Sardiñas joined the Tides on a rehab assignment Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
