LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, playing as the TeddyBears, defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox in thilling walk-off fashion 7-6 Saturday night at PNC Field. They wore TeddyBear jerseys that were auctioned off for charity following the epic tilt. Trailing in the bottom of the ninth inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre fought back to force extra innings. Ryan McBroom singled with one out and Rey Navarro bashed a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game for the TeddyBears.
As the game moves into extras, Pawtucket failed to score in the top of the tenth. Mike Miller sacrifice bunted the automatic runner, Ramon Flores, to third and Deiner Lopez walked. Rusney Castillo then grounded into a double play to end the inning. In the bottom half of the tenth, L.J. Mazzilli bunted Bruce Caldwell to third. Francisco Diaz then singled up the middle to bring Caldwell home and give the TeddyBears the victory. This was the seventh walk-off win of the season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The TeddyBears struck in the bottom of the first inning as Clint Frazier was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third when Billy McKinney doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McBroom. Zack Zehner was beaned. Navarro then smacked a double to bring Zehner home, giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 2-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Michael Ohlman hit his ninth home run of the season to cut the PawSox deficit in half. Mike Olt then doubled, Sam Travis and Dan Butler walked, and Ramon Flores singled to bring home Olt. Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Travis and tie the game at four apiece. The PawSox took the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Ivan De Jesus led off with a walk and Ohlman hit his second home run of the game.
For the TeddyBears, McBroom was two-for-two with two walks, a sacrifice fly, a home run and two RBIs. Navarro was three-for-four smacking two singles and a double. Eight of the nine Scranton/Wilkes-Barre batters finished the night with at least one hit.
SCALED THE MOUNTAIN: Over the last 19 games, the RailRiders own a 13-6 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. The RailRiders left Coca-Cola Park Thursday night having not lost any of their last five series, and after taking the first two games from Pawtucket, the RailRiders are 4-0-2 in their last six series. The RailRiders entered the series against Pawtucket trying to draw themselves back to .500 for the first time since being 19-19 May 17 (Game No. 38) and had been 0-5 in five chances to get back to .500 since May 17 before Friday's 7-4 win. With Saturday night's win, the RailRiders are above .500 and in 2nd place in the I.L. North for the first time since April 25 (10-9).
PUTTING OUT FIRES: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last week-plus. In 9G since June 17, the bullpen arms not named RHP Giovanny Gallegos had combined for 30.2 IP, 16 H, 4R/4ER (1.17 ERA), 7 BB, 28 K (8.2 K/9) before allowing 3R in 4.0 IP Friday night. Gallegos had struggled over his last three appearances with the RailRiders, allowing runs in all 3G: 4.2 IP, 7 H (7-for-21, .333 BAA), 4R/4ER, 0 BB, 8 K. However, upon arriving in the big leagues, earlier this week he went 3.0 IP without allowing a run and striking out 6 batters. In two appearances with the New York Yankees this season, the righty has tossed five scoreless innings with 7 K and 0 BB.
WORKING BACK: Wednesday night, RHP A.J. Cole faced five batters, didn't record an out and allowed three runs in a starting role against Lehigh Valley. Cole joined RHP Tommy Kahnle and RHP Adam Warren as three pitchers who have appeared with the RailRiders in 2018 on rehab. Saturday, Cole returned to the mound and went 2.1 innings with 3H, 2R/2ER while throwing 34 pitches. In the trio's four MLB Rehab Appearances: 3.1 IP, 9 H (9-for-18, .300 BAA), 10R/10ER (27.00 ERA), 5 BB, 2 HBP (4.80 WHIP), 2 K
POWERING UP: In the blink of an eye, the SWB RailRiders are the leading HR-hitting team in the International League. At the end of April, the team had 15 HR in 23G (0.65 HR/G) which was good for 6th in the 14-team I.L. Since then, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has 65 HR in its last 55G (1.18 HR/G) including 33 in 27G so far in June (1.22 HR/G).
