Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Second baseman Eddy Alvarez scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk to propel the Charlotte Knights to a 7-6 victory over the Gwinnett Stripers in the finale of their four-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte on Sunday evening. The Knights took three of four games from the visiting Stripers.
With the game tied at 6-6, left fielder Dustin Garneau drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the Knights ahead by a score of 7-6. After getting a key out in the top of the eighth inning, RHP Ian Hamilton (1-0, 0.00) returned to shut the door on the game in the top of the ninth inning. Hamilton picked up his first win of the season after he recorded the final four outs of the game.
The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from designated hitter Matt Skole, center fielder Trayce Thompson, and third baseman Patrick Leonard. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Stripers scored five times in the top of the second inning. RHP Carson Fulmer started for the Knights and was charged with all five runs over 1.2 innings pitched. RHP Tyler Danish was stellar in relief. Danish allowed just three hits over 4.1 shutout innings.
After the first two innings of play, the Knights trailed the Stripers by a score of 5-3, but the team chipped away at Gwinnett's lead over the next six innings. The Knights scored a run in the fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings en route to their come-from-behind victory.
Shortstop Jake Elmore reached base a total of five times on Sunday, as he went 2-for-5 with three walks. Elmore extended his International League-leading on-base streak to 24-straight games. Right fielder Mason Robbins also chipped in with an RBI of his own to go along with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate.
The Knights will now hit the road and make the trek to Norfolk, VA to open a quick two-game series from Harbor Park against the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles). Pre-game radio coverage of Monday's 7:05 p.m. game is set for 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
