Knights Walk Past Stripers in Series Finale

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Knights pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to edge the Gwinnett Stripers by a 7-6 score Sunday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series at BB&T Ballpark.

With the loss, the Stripers fell to 1-7 on the current 10-game road trip.

With the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Rex Brothers came in to pitch for Gwinnett. After retiring the first batter, he walked Eddy Alvarez and gave up an infield single to Mason Robbins. Brothers then walked Jake Elmore to load the bases and Dustin Garneau to force in Alvarez with the eventual winning run.

The disappointing bottom of the eighth ended a back-and-forth game that saw both teams come back from deficits.

In the top of the first, the Knights scored three runs against Gwinnett starting pitcher Kolby Allard. RBI singles by Matt Skole, Trayce Thompson and Patrick Leonard gave Charlotte a 3-0 lead.

But the in the top of the second, the Stripers took the lead. Preston Tucker led off with an infield single off Charlotte starting pitcher Carson Fulmer, and walks to Sean Kazmar Jr. and Rob Brantly loaded the bases. A Fulmer wild pitch allowed Tucker to score from third to make it 3-1. Phil Gosselin then walked to re-load the bases and Rio Ruiz followed with a grand slam (5) to left putting the Stripers on top 5-3.

The Knights closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth as Alvarez drew a two-out walk from Allard and scored from first on a double to left-center by Robbins.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights tied it. Casey Gillaspie stroked a one-out double to center and Allard was replaced with Elian Leyva. Leyva threw a pair of wild pitches, allowing Gillaspie to score to tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Charlotte took a 6-5 lead as Elmore led off with a single off Leyva and scored from third on a double to left by Garneau.

The Stripers came right back to tie the game a half inning later as back-to-back infield singles by Xavier Avery and Brantly put two on and Sal Giardina drilled a two-out single to right, scoring Avery to make it 6-6.

For Gwinnett, Allard pitched 5.1 innings with seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Leyva went 1.2 innings with two hits, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Brothers (L, 2-3) worked 1.0 inning with one hit, one earned run, three walks and one strikeout.

Fulmer tossed 1.2 innings with four hits, five earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts for the Knights. Tyler Danish worked 4.1 innings with three hits and two strikeouts. Aaron Bummer pitched 1.2 innings with three hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Ian Hamilton (W, 1-0) went 1.1 innings with one strikeout for his first Triple-A win.

Offensively for the Stripers, Ruiz was 1-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs to extend his hitting and RBI streaks to six games. Dustin Peterson was 2-for-5 and has now reached base safely in 16 consecutive games. Avery and Giardina each finished 2-for-4.

For Charlotte, Elmore was 2-for-2 with two runs. Robbins was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The Gwinnett Stripers (35-47) continue the road trip Monday night at 6:35 p.m. in Durham with the first game of a two-game series against the Bulls. The Stripers will start left-hander Michael Mader (1-0, 3.21 ERA), while the Bulls will start right-hander Zach Lee (1-1, 3.46 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:05 p.m.
