Florence, Kentucky: Former Major leaguer Corey Thurman made his Freedom debut last night, in front of 1,355 fans at Champion Window Field. But, the Rockford Riverhawks spoiled his debut, and the sweep, defeating the Freedom 6-1.
Coming off shoulder surgery, it's almost been a year since Corey Thurman has pitched. It look like Thurman got ancy in the first, allowing four earned runs on six hits through one. After the first though, Thurman settled down, and showed signs of the great pitcher he was in the Blue Jays organization, he struck out five in three and two/thirds innings, he was on a pitch count of 60. Florence got their offense from first baseman Trevor Hall, who hit is 18th homerun of the season. Darrin Kinsolving also added two hits, raising his batting average to .355. Zack Schmidt got the start at third base, and he went 2-3, his batting average now stands at .261.
Florence takes two of three from the defending Frontier League champions, now they head out to Evansville, to take on the Otters in a three game set. The Freedom hold the final playoff spot, and have a five game lead over the third place Chillicothe. The Freedom return home Friday, to take on those Paints.
