Wichita Thunder News Release

Wichita, KS (Nov. 16th) - Wichita (4-5-1-1) rattled off three unanswered goals and knocked off the Missouri Mavericks (5-5-0-0) on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 3-1 at INTRUST Bank Arena. Kenton Miller, Ian Lowe and RG Flath each scored to pace the Thunder offense while Tim Boron earned his third win of the season. Wichita improves to 2-1-0-0 in the Independence Cup Series against Missouri and host the Mavericks next Saturday night.

Chris Crane got things started for the Mavericks 5:21 into the game. He took a drop pass at the top of the right circle and fired one past Boron to make it 1-0. Towards the end of the first, the Thunder were assessed a five minute major to Dan Milan while Scott Langdon went off two minutes for holding, giving the Mavericks a three minute power play that carried over into the second. Wichita didn't allow the Mavericks any room and the first period came to an end.

After killing off the final 30 seconds of the power play at the start of the second, Wichita was able to get things going. The Thunder outshot the Mavericks 16-5 in the frame and capitalized on a four-on-three power play. Flath got into a scoring area in front of the net and tied it at one with assists going to Danick Gauthier and Stephen Schultz.

Early in the third, Lowe netted his first of the season after collecting a nifty pass from Kurtis Bartliff and beat Mike Clemente to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. The Mavericks had their best chance of the game when Michael Trebish was sent off for holding at 9:34 and Ian Lowe was called for delay of game at 9:53. Missouri was unable to capitalze on the two-man advantage as the Thunder penalty killing unit was smothering in the defensive zone. Kenton Miller tacked on a power play goal at 18:35 when Gauthier danced through two defenders and dished it off to Miller for the tally. His second power play goal against his former team this season helped the Thunder pull away for the 3-1 win.

Flath recorded his 75th goal in a Thunder uniform and his second of the season. Miller finished with a goal and an assist. He has four goals on the season, all of which have come on the power play. Stephen Schultz finished with a pair of assists while Gauthier had two helpers as well. Boron claimed the victory, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Clemente suffered his third loss of the season, stopping 30 of 33 shots he faced.

Wichita went 2-for-3 on the power play. Missouri was 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

Wichita will visit the BOK Center on Tuesday night to close a three game in four night stretch against the Tulsa Oilers at 7 p.m. The Thunder return home on Saturday night to host the Missouri Mavericks at 7:05 p.m.
