Royals Take the Team's Only Trip to Toledo in a Shootout, 4-3

Toledo, OH - The Reading Royals (Â-Â-Â-Â-Â-Â-Â-Â-Â-win, 6-5-0-012) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League, defeated the Toledo Walleye (loss, 8-2-0-117), 4-3, in a six-round shootout at Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.

For the first time this season, the Royals won for the third straight time, and in the process snapped the Toledo Walleye's league-long six game win streak with a 4-3 shootout win in Reading's only trip of the season to the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. Reading scored first, but had to battle back from two separate third period deficits-the second time only thirty-two seconds after Toledo had taken a 3-2 lead-to ultimately get to the shootout where the Royals are a perfect 3-0 this year.

First Period (1-1, Tie)

Reading capitalized on a relentless early attack, when Cam Reid weaved his way down the right wing wall, walked a Toledo defender, and ripped snap shot across the body of goaltender Jeff Lerg low to the stick side for his fifth of the season-and his second "˜first goal' in as many games.

Despite outshooting the Walleye 19 - 11 and holding a significant territorial advantage in the first, the Royals gave the Walleye some first period life, when goaltender Connor Knapp misplayed a pass from below the goal line directly to Toledo's Tyler Barnes in the right circle. With Knapp trying to scramble back into the empty net, Barnes fed the puck to the low slot where Cody Lampl fanned on the original bid, but the puck fell towards Shane Berschbach, who drove it home for his second of the year.

Second Period (1-1, Tie)

No Scoring

Despite starting the second period with forty-one seconds of five-on-three power play time in favor of the top power play unit in the league-the Toledo Walleye-the Royals were able to hold the Walleye off the board in what proved to be a scoreless second period, despite the fact that Toledo outshoot the Royals 14-5 in the second frame.

Third Period (3-3, Tie)

Holmstrom (6); unassisted (breakaway jammed puck through)

A misplayed puck at the right point by defenseman Jordan Heywood while the Royals were on the power play resulted in a short-handed breakaway for Josh Holmstrom, who finished by stuffing the puck through Knapp for his sixth of the season.

1:47 later the Royals re-tied the game at two when defenseman Michael Caruso fired a hard snap shot from the right point that deflected off the upper body of Olivier Labelle and ended up in the net for his third of the season.

Unfortunately, for the second time in the game, goaltender Connor Knapp misplayed a pass into a Toledo goal. Knapp controlled the puck below the goal line and attempted to rim it up the near side boards; but Justin Mercier picked off the pass and sent the puck to the mid-slot where Kyle Bonis was planted for an easy wide open shot to give the Walleye their second lead of the game. The Royals pulled Knapp at that point and brought on goaltender Martin Oullette, who would eventually pick up the shootout win.

Thirty-two seconds later, the Royals re-tied the game on a beautiful passing sequence set up by an aggressive play by David Marshall, who drew the attention of two Toledo defenders and fed Cam Reid, who pulled the puck around the Walleye player and dished to Hughesman who was set on the right side for a point-blank wide open chance. Hughesman did not miss for his fifth of the year-which is tied with Reid and Marshall for the team lead in that category.

Overtime (No Scoring) (3-3, Tie)

Despite quality opportunities at both ends of the ice during the overtime, a couple of quality saves by Lerg and Ouellette forced this one to the shootout-that would require six rounds again thanks to the play of the netminders.

NOTES:

The scratches for the Royals tonight were: Dan Ford (d) (healthy), Maxim Lamarche (d) (injury), Matt Hatch (f) (injury), and Justin Daniels (f) (healthy)..

For the second straight game, Cam Reid scored the game's first goal. Reid, who also picked up an assist on Hughesman's game-tying goal in the third period, stretched his personal point streak to ten games (5g-8a13pts).

Adam Hughesman recorded his team leading fifth multi-point performance of the season (1g-1a).

Olivier Labelle's goal-his third of the season-was his seventy-fourth career goal as a Royal, pushing him back into the all-time leader.

David Marshall pushed his point streak to four straight games (4g-2a6pts).

The Royals killed all nine of the power play opportunities they faced in the three games played this weekend.
