Thunder Hold on for 3-2 Victory in Altoona
August 11, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
Altoona, PA- RHP Andrew Brackman tossed six scoreless innings, and the Thunder bullpen pitched out of a ninth inning threat to secure a 3-2 Trenton victory over the Curve on Wednesday night in Altoona. The Thunder (70-47) now move to 23 games over .500, their highest water mark of the season.
Justin Christian started off the scoring in the top of the first off LHP Tony Watson (4-2), as he belted a solo home run over the left field wall to give Trenton an immediate 1-0 lead. Watson then gave up four consecutive singles, one of which an RBI single into center field by Marcos Vechionacci to score Corban Joseph. The Thunder had the bases loaded with only one out against Watson, but Edwar Gonzalez grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Another run came across in the third inning for the Thunder, as Austin Romine singled with outs and was then driven in on an RBI triple by Marcos Vechionacci, making it 3-0 Trenton. On the play, Altoona RF Miles Durham lost the fly ball hit by Vechionacci in the lights and watched as it dropped behind him down the right field line.
Brackman (3-6) settled down early and limited the Curve to just four hits while striking out four in six innings of work. The right-hander walked just one in his first road victory with Trenton.
With Trenton leading 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth, RHP Ryan Pope came on for his second straight game, and with one on and two outs surrendered a two-run homer to Hector Gimenez to center field. Pope then was able to get the next batter Anthony Norman to ground out weakly to end the game.
On the night, Austin Romine and Marcos Vechionacci combined to go 4-for-8 with two RBI. Former Thunder reliever Anthony Claggett pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Curve.
Trenton goes for the sweep against Altoona on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Adam Warren starts for the Thunder, while the Curve go with LHP Jeff Locke. Catch all the action on 107.7 FM The Bronc or at www.trentonthunder.com.
