New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(Richmond, VA)---The Fisher Cats rallied from down 3-1 with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but fell in Richmond on Wednesday night when Brandon Belt (2-for-6, HR, 3 RBI) hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 14th inning for a 5-3 win.
Belt hit his winning blast off losing pitcher Ronald Uviedo (2-5) after a single by Nick Noonan.
New Hampshire (68-49) tied the game in the ninth against the Flying Squirrels' closer Rafael Cova. Shawn Bowman (2-for-6, HR, RBI) led off the ninth with his 21st home run to cut the Richmond lead to 3-2. Adam Loewen then walked and David Cooper doubled him home to tie the game.
Danny Farquhar worked three scoreless innings in relief, including a perfect bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Farquhar struck out five and the Fisher Cats staff matched a franchise record with 17 strikeouts in the game.
Richmond (57-59) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first against New Hampshire starter Rey Gonzalez. Darren Ford doubled and stole third and Nick Noonan reached on a strikeout/wild pitch. Thomas Neal grounded out, scoring Ford. Noonan scored on a single by Conor Gillaspie to make it 2-0.
They would be the only runs Gonzalez would give up in six innings. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four.
Catcher Matt Liuzza hit his first home run of the season to get the Fisher Cats on the board in the top of the second against Richmond starter Mike MacDonald.
MacDonald, who shut out the Fisher Cats at Merchantsauto.com Stadium last Thursday night, left after six innings with a 2-1 lead.
The Flying Squirrels added a run in the seventh inning. Thomas Neal and Brandon Belt put together back-to-back doubles to make it 3-1.
After New Hampshire tied the game in the ninth, the offense fell silent. Cova and winning pitcher David Quinowski (1-0) set down the Fisher Cats in order in the 10th through the 13th innings. Cooper had a two-out single in the top of the 14th, but the Fisher Cats failed to cash in.
The rubber game of the series will be Thursday night at 7:05pm at The Diamond. New Hampshire is scheduled to start RHP Zach Stewart (8-2, 3.67) against Flying Squirrels' RHP David Mixon (10-6, 3.63). Live coverage can be heard on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Dave Collins beginning at 6:45pm.
New Hampshire returns home to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, August 17, to play the Binghamton Mets. The first 2,000 fans attending the game will receive a Kevin Youkilis Bobblehead courtesy of Irving Oil. Fisher Cats playoff tickets are now on sale.
