Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox welcome a pair of Baltimore Orioles on Major League rehab assignments this week. Orioles outfielder and 2008 Eastern League Most Valuable Player Lou Montanez is scheduled to join the Baysox on Wednesday, Aug. 11, and Thursday, Aug. 12. Orioles reliever Jim Johnson is scheduled to join Bowie Thursday, Aug. 12.
Montanez is currently on a 21-game hitting streak in Bowie, the longest in franchise history. He hit safely with the Baysox in his final 19 games of 2008, beginning July 17, in Harrisburg. He also hit safely in two games on a Major League rehab assignment last year, topping the previous record of 19 consecutive games, set by Jeff Fiorentino from August 13, 2006, through August 30, 2006.
Montanez won the Triple Crown and Most Valuable Player awards in the Eastern League in 2008, setting a Baysox franchise record with a .335 batting average, and finishing with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs. He was just the fifth Eastern League player to win the Triple Crown, and the first in more than 30 years.
Johnson pitched for Bowie in 2005 and 2006. He started one game in 2005, throwing 7.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. He appeared in 27 games for the Baysox in 2006, including 26 starts. He led the team with 13 wins, finishing 13-6 with a 4.44 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 156.0 innings.
