Anthony Reyes Starts New Rehab Wednesday

August 11, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Anthony Reyes will begin a new rehab assignment Wednesday night for the Double-A Akron Aeros. Reyes last pitched Sunday, August 1st for the Aeros at Canal Park before being recalled from his rehab assignment later in the week. He remains on the recovery path back to Cleveland after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive right elbow surgery in June 2009.

Reyes will start for Akron at 7:05 p.m. tonight against the Reading Phillies at Canal Park. He will have an undisclosed innings and pitch count limit, whichever occurs first. Recently promoted left-hander Matt Packer, who leads full-season minor league baseball with a 1.58 ERA combined this season, will follow Reyes in the game with the R-Phils.

Before his right elbow injury, Reyes last pitched for the Indians on May 22nd, 2009 in a game with the Cincinnati Reds. He posted a 1-1 record with a 6.57 ERA in eight total MLB starts in 2009 and began his first rehab stint on July 17th this year with the rookie-level Arizona League Indians where he finished 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts.

He continued with the Aeros and struggled in his first two career games in the Eastern League. Reyes collected a 0-1 record in Akron and a 17.36 ERA, allowing seven hits and five walks in just 4.2 innings pitched before his temporary 10-day shut down.

Cleveland originally acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals organization in a trade on July 26th, 2008 for former Aeros reliever Luis Perdomo and cash. A product of the University of Southern California, Reyes owns a 13-26 record and a 5.12 ERA across 67 games (52 starts) in his five-year major league career. He is a member of the Indians 40-man roster but does not count because he remains on the 60-day disabled list.

The Cardinals selected Reyes in the 15th round of the June 2003 Draft and he previously pitched in Double-A in 2004 with the Tennessee Diamond Jaxx of the Southern League. He was 6-2 with a 3.03 ERA in 12 starts for Tennessee that year, and he has a career 18-11 record with a 3.15 ERA in 55 Class AAA starts. Baseball America named him the top pitching prospect in the St. Louis system prior to the 2005 and 2006 seasons and he was the winning pitcher in Game 1 of the 2006 World Series against Detroit.

Akron's three-game series with Reading continues Wednesday night for "Paws and Pitches" Pet Night at Canal Park sponsored by Camp Bow Wow of Cuyahoga Falls. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. with proceeds benefitting the Humane Society of Greater Akron and the Summit County Animal Coalition. Fans can bring all the members of the family for the fun in downtown Akron with a special offer of a $48 Family Pack including four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and four bags of chips, a savings of $28!

The Aeros have lost eight of their last 10 games but will send Reyes to the mound tomorrow to match up against Reading's J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 4.76 ERA). Join Jim Clark for Wednesday's radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
