Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Brandon Laid smacked a three-run homer in the third inning and David Phelps tossed seven innings to pace Trenton in a 9-1 win over Altoona on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. The win marks Trenton's eighth straight as the team remains a half game up in first place.
With two outs in the third inning Austin Krum worked a walk and Austin Romine reached on an infield single. Laird then drove a pitch over the left-center field wall to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead. Laird currently leads all of professional baseball with 62runs batted in on the season.
David Phelps (5-0) held Altoona scoreless through the first four innings. Altoona threatened in the top of the third with runners on the corners but Phelps struck out Gorkys Hernandez on a slider to end it. Altoona would score in the fifth inning off Phelps to make it a 5-1 contest on an RBI double from right fielder Miles Durham. Phelps tossed seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the win.
Trenton added two more in the fourth inning off Alderson for a 5-0 lead. Edwar Gonzalez doubled and scored on a single from Justin Snyder. Justin Christian would bring home Snyder with a double to right-center field. The double extended Christian's hitting streak to nine games and adding at least one RBI in each game during the streak.
Tim Alderson (5-3) tossed only four innings in his thirteenth start of the season. Alderson allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the loss. Jimmy Barthmaier entered for Altoona in fifth inning and allowed two runs on just one hit in the frame. With two outs Dan Brewer singled to right and Marcos Vechionacci walked. The runners advanced on a double steal and Brewer came home on a throwing error form the catcher Gimenez. Vechionacci moved to third on the error and scored on a Barthmaier wild pitch.
Justin Snyder and Luis Nunez each drove in runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead. Snyder finished 2-4 with two runs batted in on the night. Ryan Pope pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to finish the game.
Game two of the series will be on Wednesday at 7:05 from Waterfront Park. Trenton will have LHP Wilkin de la Rosa on the mound against LHP Rudy Owens for Altoona.
