TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Binghamton Mets will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels ended a four-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Reading Phillies in Monday morning in the finale of a four-game series at FirstEnergy Stadium.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his last start against New Britain 6/10...Allowed four runs on six hits in six innings...Struck out two batters and walked three...Gave up a three-run homer to Steve Singleton with one in the top of the sixth inning...Two of the three batters he walked scored...Retired the leadoff batter in five of his six innings on the mound...Lone leadoff man to reach scored...Recorded nine ground outs and seven fly outs...Threw 72 pitches, 45 strikes...Went at least six innings for the second consecutive start and just the third time in 11 outings...Walked more batters that he struck out for the sixth time in 11 starts...Has allowed seven runs on 15 hits over 19 innings in his last three starts since coming off of the DL 5/30 (3.32 ERA)...Had allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits in 5 2/3 in his previous two outings before landing on the DL (14.30 ERA)...Left-handed batters are hitting just .205 against him (8-for-39).
Left-hander Mike Antonini gets the nod in game one of the three-game series for the B-Mets...Earned the win in his last outing against Bowie...Allowed one run on four hits over seven innings...Struck out seven batters and walked none...Matched season-highs in strike outs and innings pitched...Each of his last two starts came against Bowie...Allowed just two runs on 10 hits over 13 1/3 innings while striking out 14 and walking just one...Is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA over his last four starts since losing to Bowie 5/19...Has struck out 23 batters and walked two over that span...Is 3-1 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts on the road...Has gone more than five innings in nine of his last 10 starts...Has the lowest BB/9IP ratio among Eastern League starting pitchers (8 BB/69.1 IP)...Has given up 10 home runs...Left-handed batters are hitting .289 (28-for-97) while right-handed batters are hitting just .228 (38-for-167) against him...Allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings and received a no-decision in his lone start against Richmond 5/24...Struck out seven batters and walked none...Gave up a solo home run to Thomas Neal...Spent the majority of 2009 with Double-A Binghamton going 7-5 with a 3.52 ERA in 25 games, 20 starts...Allowed 137 hits in 115 innings of work (.299 OBA)...Made two starts with Triple- A Buffalo and went 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA (10 runs in 7 innings)...Selected in the 18th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft... HEAT WAVE: The Flying Squirrels are batting .312 (58-for-186) over their last five games including eight home runs and 26 runs scored (5.2 R/G)...The club has reached double-digits in hits in four of those five contests...Prior to the recent hot streak, Richmond was batting just .239 (461-for-1922) with 26 home runs and 194 runs scored over the club's first 59 games (3.3 R/G)...The Flying Squirrels are 1-4 over their previous five games...Overall the club is batting .246 as a team, tied for ninth in the Eastern League.
POWER SURGE: The Flying Squirrels hit three home runs yesterday and have now homered 11 times in the last seven games (1.6 HR/G)...The club has had three multi-homer games over that span including a season-high three home runs now twice (6/8 & 6/14)...Richmond had hit just 23 home runs through its first 57 contests including five multi-home run games (0.4 HR/G)...The Flying Squirrels have climbed from last in the Eastern League in home runs to tied with Altoona for 10th (34) over that span.
TURPEN TIME: Right-hander Daniel Turpen has allowed only one of the 18 runners he has inherited to score (.056)...The 23-year-old has stranded each of the last 13 runners he has inherited...The lone runner he inherited that ended up scoring came on a wild pitch 4/21 against New Britain...Turpen's 1.08 BB/9IP (4BB/33.1 IP) is the lowest among Eastern League relievers.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal has hits in 10 straight games including a season-high four hits in a 4-for-4 effort Tuesday night against New Britain...It is the second 10-game hit streak for Neal and his fourth of five games or more...Since dropping down in the order 6/4 at Trenton, he is 17-for-36 (.472) over his last 10 contests with four doubles, a home run, seven RBI and four runs scored...The 22-year-old leads the club with 20 multi-hit games, 15 doubles and 20 extra base hits and is tied with Conor Gillaspie for the team lead with 30 RBI...He is fourth in the Eastern League with 70 hits...Neal is the only Flying Squirrel to have appeared in all 64 games.
BRIGHT BLUE SKY-LER: Super utility man Skyler Stromsmoe has hits in each of his last seven games, a season-long hit streak, including a season-high three hits 6/11 at Reading...Over the course of the streak, he is 12-for-31 (.387) with a double, triple, two home runs, three RBI, and four runs scored...The 26-year-old has hits in eight of the nine games he has played in since coming off of the Disabled List 6/5...Since his return to the active roster, Stromsmoe is 13-for-38 (.342).
LA TORRID: Catcher Tyler La Torre has hits in each of his last five games including going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on Monday morning at Reading...It was the second time in his career that La Torre drove in three runs (9/5/07 @ Eugene)...He is 7-for-19 (.368) with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 81 double plays in 64 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Richmond improved to 10-0 when one of its starters goes seven innings or more with yesterday's 7-2 win over Reading...Right-handers David Mixon and Daryl Maday have accounted for eight of the 10 wins.
