Altoona Curve News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Altoona Curve hurlers were unable to put away Trenton hitters as the Thunder (AA - New York Yankees) scored eight of their nine runs with two outs in a 9-1 whitewashing of the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park.
The loss for the Curve (41-23) is their largest margin of defeat in the 2010 season, matching the eight run loss they suffered at home against Harrisburg on May 10 at Blair County Ballpark.
Tim Alderson suffered the loss for Altoona - the righty's first since May 19 - after he allowed four runs over four runs. Each of the four runs Alderson permitted came with two men out. Alderson allowed a two-out three-run home run to MiLB RBI leader Brandon Laird in the third inning.
Trenton who ran their overall record to 39-23 and home record - which is tops in the Eastern League to 24-10 - would take a 4-0 edge off of Alderson in the fourth when Justin Snyder singled in Edwar Gonzalez.
Jimmy Barthmaier permitted two runs in the fifth inning as the Thunder, who won their eighth straight game on Tuesday, plated runs on a throwing error by Curve catcher Hector Gimenez and a wild pitch.
The Thunder would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning. Dustin Molleken allowed a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luis Nunez and an RBI single by Snyder to extend their lead. Both runs were charged to Jeff Sues.
Altoona's only offensive threat came in the top of the fifth when Miles Durham doubled home Gimenez to put the Curve on the board.
The Curve look to even the three-game series in game two on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Rudy Owens (6-3, 2.79) goes for Altoona while Trenton opposes with lefty Wilkin De La Rosa (2-2, 5.18). Air time on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:35 p.m.
