Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Clayton Tanner retired the first eight hitters he faced on his way to a six-inning, quality start, leading Richmond to a 5-2 triumph over the reeling B-Mets at The Diamond Tuesday night. Binghamton has now lost four in a row and 15 of its last 19 road games. D.J. Wabick recorded two hits and drove in a run to lead the B-Mets, who out-hit the Flying Squirrels 8-7 in the loss.

Binghamton (30-34) starter Mike Antonini faced one over the minimum through the first three innings, holding the Flying Squirrels hitless. The B-Mets bats got to Tanner in the fourth. Nick Evans led off the inning with a single to right. With one out, Marshall Hubbard hit a high chopper over the head of first baseman Michael Ambort for a single, moving Evans up to third. Omir Santos got Binghamton on the board with an RBI double just inside the line at third, plating Evans. Wabick plated the B-Mets final run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Richmond (31-33) took command in the proceeding half-inning. Antonini came out flat in the fourth, issuing a walk to Brandon Crawford. Then, Thomas Neal chased Crawford home with a double into the left-field corner, his team-leading 16th of the season. Conor Gillaspie followed Neal with a single to put runners at the corners. After Michael Ambort struck out, Nick Noonan roped a ground-rule double over the head of Hubbard in left, scoring Neal to tie the score at two. Clay Timpner put the Flying Squirrels ahead for good 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to left.

Antonini ran into trouble again in the fifth. Darren Ford opened the inning with a double, his 12th. Brandon Crawford moved him to third with a groundout and Ford scored with two outs on a Gillaspie single, upping the lead to 4-2.

Antonini failed to reach five innings for just the second time this season, and for the first time since his 2010 debut, April 11. The southpaw was charged with the loss after permitting three runs over 4 2/3 innings. He walked a season-high three men.

Tanner, in contrast, walked just one over six, strong innings. The lefty limited Binghamton to two runs on six hits to claim his fourth win.

The Squirrels added a run of insurance in the eighth against reliever Eddie Kunz courtesy of another Timpner sac fly, after Kunz allowed the first two men to reach.

Tony Pena, Jr. and Rafael Cova tossed the final three innings to nail down the win for Richmond. Pena was superb in two innings, striking out a pair of men and Cova fired a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save.

The B-Mets look to even the series Wednesday at 7:05 PM in the middle game of the three-game set. RHP Josh Stinson (3-1, 2.83) will go for Binghamton and Richmond will counter with RHP Mike MacDonald (1-5, 4.76). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
