Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels claimed the opener of a three-games series from the Binghamton Mets, 5-2, in front of 3,513 at The Diamond on Tuesday night.
The B-Mets broke on top first in the fourth inning, getting to Richmond left-hander Clayton Tanner for a pair of runs. Nick Evans got Binghamton started with a single into right field. A batter later, Marshall Hubbard replicated the single to put runners on the corners. Omir Santos opened the scoring with a double down the third-base line that scored Evans and put runners at second and third with one out. Binghamton took a 2-0 lead when D.J. Wabick lined a sacrifice fly to left field.
Richmond's response came in the bottom of the inning as left-hander Mike Antonini walked Brandon Crawford to start the inning. Thomas Neal followed with a double to the left-field corner and Crawford scored all the way from first base to cut the lead in half. Conor Gillaspie followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Nick Noonan bounced a ground-rule double over the wall in left field to tie the ballgame and put runners at second and third. Richmond grabbed the lead for the first time when Clay Timpner lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Gillaspie in for a 3-2 advantage.
The Squirrels tacked on a run in the fifth as they chased Antonini from the ballgame. Darren Ford led off the inning with a double to left field. Two batters later Gillaspie singled through the middle to give Richmond a 4-2 lead and end the evening for Antonini.
Antonini (4-5) lasted just 4 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season. He was charged with four earned runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three.
Tanner (4-4) endured his only trouble in the fourth, and recovered to work through the sixth inning. He earned the win while allowing just two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out six.
Richmond capped the scoring with a run in the eighth inning against reliever Eddie Kunz. Timpner supplied his second sacrifice fly of the night, plating Michael Ambort who had singled.
Tony Pena Jr. worked two scoreless innings of relief, taking Richmond through the eighth inning. Rafael Cova took it from there, working the ninth in order for his 12th save of the season.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:05 PM at The Diamond. RHP Mike MacDonald (1-5, 4.76) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Josh Stinson (3-1, 2.83) for Binghamton.
