New Brunswick, NJ - The Mercer County Chapter of the American Conference on Diversity will hold its Annual Humanitarian Awards Reception at The Trenton Marriott Downtown on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. John W. Jordan, a vice president of TD Bank and Mercer County Chapter Chair, announces that the honorees are Jack Mudge, executive director of Advancing Opportunities, formerly known as Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey, Inc; Will Smith, general manager of The Trenton Thunder; and Jeffrey M. Zeigler, general manager of the Trenton Marriott Downtown. The Humanitarian Awards reception is being co-chaired by Alysia Welch-Chester of the Mercer Regional Chamber of Commerce and Nekia Lewis, of Horizon New Jersey Health.

"Proceeds from the reception will provide funding enabling the American Conference on Diversity to present programs that promote understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures," says Diane Schwartz, president and CEO of the American Conference on Diversity. The Mercer County Chapter supports the American Conference on Diversity's Youth Leadership Institute programs, including Lead for Diversity; Manytown and School Swap.

Lead for Diversity is a peer leadership program helping youth leaders examine personal, cultural and institutional prejudices with a goal of breaking down barriers and stereotypes. After participating in Lead for Diversity, empowered students return to their schools to put the ideas they have learned in to practice by developing and implementing Action Plans aimed to reduce bias and prejudice in their schools.

Manytown is a one-day Regional Youth Leadership Forum which brings together Lead for Diversity delegates and other high school students from different communities to share, discuss and learn from specialists on a variety of student-selected topics in a culturally diverse learning environment.

School Swap, is a curriculum where a group of students from one school experience a day in the life of students from a demographically different school. The experiences of high school students are greatly affected by the size of the school, its geographic location, socioeconomic make-up, and student, faculty and staff diversity. The goal of School Swap is for students to begin dialogue on these differences and their root causes, as well as to find, perhaps unexpectedly, common ground.

To register for the reception or for more information call Linda Tondow at 732-745-9330 or email Linda@AmericanConferenceonDiversity.org.
