Liuzza Hits Walk-Off HR in 1-0 NH Win
August 31, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Matt Liuzza led off the bottom of the 10th, and broke a scoreless tie with a walk-off home run to lift the Fisher Cats past the Senators 1-0 in front of 4,629 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Liuzza's fourth blast of the season was all the offense the Fisher Cats would need as the New Hampshire pitching staff collectively threw their 10th shutout of the season. It was the fifth walk-off of the season for the Fisher Cats.
Fisher Cats pitcher Clint Everts made his second start of the season, and received the no-decision after his longest outing since June, 2007. Everts went six innings, holding the Senators scoreless on four singles while striking out four and walking one. Previously this season, Everts came out of the bullpen for five frames in New Hampshire's 19-inning affair against Altoona on August 13.
Trystan Magnuson entered the game for the Fisher Cats in relief and faced the minimum nine batters in his three innings of work. Magnuson retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth frames, striking out three. He allowed a walk in the ninth, but got the following batter to ground into a 5-4-3 DP to retire the side.
Alan Farina (1-0) earned the victory by retiring the Senators in order in the 10th inning with one strikeout.
The Fisher Cats (78-57) had a run taken off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. With men on first and third and one out, Jonathan Jaspe grounded into a 4-6-3 double play even though he was called safe when the throw drew the first baseman off the bag. Adam Loewen, who crossed the plate on the play, would've scored but runner's interference was called on the slide at second.
New Hampshire got multiple hits in both the sixth and seventh innings, but weren't able to score. After base-knocks by Luis Sanchez and Adam Calderone with no outs in the sixth, Harrisburg got out of the jam with a 5-2 putout and a twin killing. In the bottom of the seventh Liuzza and Jonathan Jaspe each singled, but were left stranded with two outs on a ground ball to second.
Harrisburg (72-63) hurler Ryan Tatusko also received a no-decision after his quality start of seven innings. Tutusko gave up no runs by scattering six hits and two walks while striking out three. Cory Van Allen (0-1) received the loss after giving up the lone run of the game in the tenth.
The homestand continues on Wednesday with the third contest of the four-game set with the Harrisburg Senators at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander B.J. LaMura (5-6) will be opposed by Harrisburg starter Tanner Roark (1-1). Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
It is Fisher Cats Backpack Giveaway on Wednesday. Be one of the first 1,000 kids to enter the stadium and receive a FREE Fisher Cats Backpack courtesy of U.S. Cellular. Fans will be playing USA Subs Baseball Bingo, and will get the chance to meet Boston Sportscaster Bob Lobel, who will be signing autographs from 5:45-6:15 p.m. Playoff tickets and 2011 Season Tickets are now available.
