The Strike Out Cancer In Kids, now in its 16th season, is an exciting, competitive, fun program that supports the Maine Children's Cancer Program. The MCCP clinic, based in Scarborough, Maine, is a special place where children with cancer and their families can find the highest quality medical care along with support, love, and hope. The program is a season long fundraiser based on the number of strikeouts the Portland Sea Dogs pitchers throw during their season. Individuals and companies make a per strikeout pledge and at the end of the season we tally the number of strikeouts the team throws. For example, if someone pledges $.10 per strike out and there are 1,000 strike outs this season, the total pledge will be $100. TB Bank leads the way donating $10.00 per strikeout. The Portland Sea Dogs average 1,000 strike outs per season.

In 1994, the Portland Sea Dogs began their first season at Hadlock Field in Portland. During that season, Charlie Eshbach, the General Manager of the Sea Dogs, and John Menario, then Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Peoples Heritage Bank came up with the idea of Strike Out Cancer in Kids to combine their resources to support the community and enrich the quality of life in Maine. The first fundraising goal was $20,000 in 1995 and today the program raises annually over $300,000.

Through programs such as the Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program, the Maine Children's Cancer Program at Maine Medical Center has become one of the top six cancer treatment centers for children in the United States. The Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program is made possible through community leaders and sponsors of the program: TD Bank, Anthem, Time Warner Cable, The Portland Sea Dogs, WMTW ABC 8, Maine Medical Center.

Fans may make a donation to the Strike Out Cancer in Kids program online at www.mmc.org/strikeout or by filling out a pledge card at Hadlock Field. New this year, we are proud to introduce a Strike Out Cancer in Kids texting campaign. Text MCCP to 85944 to make a $10 donation to the Strike Out Cancer In Kids program.
