August 30, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, AA-Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that Assistant General Manager Greg Coleman completed his goal of rounding the bases at Waterfront Park 500 times. Coleman started his journey at 7:07 AM and finished at 2:32 PM completing 500 trips around the bases in 7 hours and 25 minutes. Each trip around the bases is 360 feet, so Coleman traveled over 34 miles to complete the challenge. By comparison, the standard marathon distance is 26 miles 385 yards.
Trenton Thunder General Manager Brad Taylor said of this feat, "It was truly one of the most remarkable things I have ever been a part of. Anyone who didn't have a tear in their eye when he finished doesn't understand how committed Greg Coleman is to his family. The Thunder are extremely proud to have him as a member of our family."
Coleman's inspiration for taking on this challenge was his 3-year old son Kevin, who was recently diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS). PDD-NOS is a disorder related to autism which affects the development of social interaction and communication.
The Thunder has been accepting pledges for each lap around the bases completed by Coleman. Proceeds will benefit the New Jersey Center for Outreach and Services for the Autism Community (COSAC). COSAC is a non-profit agency providing information and advocacy, services, family and professional education and consultation.
"I appreciate the opportunity to make a difference, said Thunder Assistant General Manager Greg Coleman. "If we can help generate awareness for COSAC and make people aware of the services they provide to families, then it was well worth it. I would really like to thank the fans, sponsors, and the whole Thunder family for their support."
This baseball marathon nicknamed the "Thunder 500," was one event as part of "Make A Difference Month" at Waterfront Park. Through the end of the 2006 season on September 4, a portion of ticket sales will support autism research, education, and advocacy programs. To purchase tickets in support of this program fans are instructed to go to www.trentonthunder.com and click on the "Make A Difference Month" link for an order form. The form can be mailed, faxed (609-394-9666) or delivered to Waterfront Park. Phone orders are also accepted at 609-394-3300 and fans are asked to mention "Make A Difference" when ordering.
