Chesapeake Baysox News Release
August 30, 2006 - Bowie, MD - On a misty evening in Bowie, the Bowie Baysox had no answer for the Harrisburg Senators bats, dropping their 74th game of the season 9-4 in front of 1,758. RHP Beau Hale got the start for the Baysox and was responsible for the first four runs, while the bullpen allowed five more.
Harrisburg put three consecutive hits on the board in the second inning, taking a quick 2-0 lead off Hale. Salomon Manriquez singled on a sharp line drive to Dustin Yount at first base and scored two batters later on Cristian Guerrero's double into right field. Josh Whitesell, who had singled off the mound and up the middlle, then scored on a ground ball to second base.
A successful double steal by Noah Hall and Ryan Hubele put two runners into scoring position with one out. Leo Daigle then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Hall, cutting the deficit in half.
Harrisburg collected two more runs on five straight hits in the fifth inning off Hale. Prentice Redman knocked in Kory Casto with an RBI single and Josh Whitesell drove in Redman giving the Senators a three run lead.
Eric DuBose allowed three straight Harrisburg hits to start the sixth inning, plating one more run, and walked the bases loaded before retiring a single batter. Whitesell then picked up two more RBI on a single down the first base line and Cristian Guerrero knotted his third hit of the evening, scoring Redman from third. After Jason Pearson replaced DuBose, Trey Webb slapped a single up the middle, scoring Whitesell with the fifth run in the inning. Harrisburg sent 17 batters to the plate in the fifth and sixth innings combined.
Jeff Fiorentino doubled to center field in the bottom half of the frame off reliever Daniel Foli to continue his hitting streak to 19 games. Two batters later, Raúl Chavez grounded out to shortstop, scoring Fiorentino from third base, making the score 9-2 in favor of the visitors.
Carlos Duran rocketed a double into right field to lead off the Baysox eighth, followed by Bryan Bass' third triple of the year, plating Duran. After Fiorentino walked, Hall drove a fastball right back up the middle to add another run for the Baysox.
The 19 hits for Harrisburg set a season-high for Baysox pitching as well as for the Harrisburg offense. Despite giving up 19 hits and nine runs, the four Baysox pitchers were able to strand 14 Senator runners, including the bases loaded in both the fifth and ninth innings.
Transactions: Earlier in the day the Baltimore Orioles announced that they have acquired SS Angel Chavez from the Philadelphia Phillies as the player to be named later in the Jeff Conine deal. Chavez spent six years in the San Francisco Giants organization, including 10 games with the in 2005, before spending the majority of this season in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
Chavez began the season with the Reading Phillies and hit .255 with the Phillies and .276 with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the transaction.
Chavez will take the roster spot made vacant when Pete Shier was placed on the Disabled List with a hip flexor strain. Gera Alvarez is also out for the season after being stung by a bee and suffering an allergic reaction two days later.
