Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
There's nothing more fun than watching the home team play a little long ball
Wednesday night in front of 5,612 spectators at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Goldeyes got a grand slam home run from Justin Bass, a three-run homer from Jon Weber and a solo shot off the bat of Brian Myrow en route to a 9-4 win over the Gary Southshore Railcats.
With the win, the Goldeys snapped a four-game losing streak and avoided being swept by the RailCats. Winnipeg improved to 44-32 and pulled to within half a game of the St. Paul Saints in the race for first in the American Association's North Division, pending the outcome of St. Paul's game Wednesday night. The Goldeyes and Saints will open a three-game series in St. Paul on Friday night.
The Fish also got Rick Forney his 300th victory as manager of the Goldeyes.
"I've just been around here a long time," Forney said modestly. "You eventually run into a few wins.
"Anybody who knows me knows I'm not a person who's into individual awards. The only thing I care about is winning championships and that takes a team effort."
The Goldeyes started early for Forney as Myrow hit his solo shot with two out in the first. In the second, Jon Weber led off with a single, Luis Alen singled, Lou Ott singled and then Bass hit a grand slam home, his team-leading 14th of the season.
In the fifth, the Goldeyes scored four more. Ridge Carpenter was hit by a pitch, went to second on a sacrifice by Price Kendall and scored on a single by Kody Kaiser, a single that extended Kaiser's hitting streak to 22 games. Brian Myrow was safe on a fielder's choice as Kaiser was erased at second, Wes Long singled and then Jon Weber hit a three-run bomb.
The Goldeyes were leading 9-1 when Gary's Brad Boyer hit a three-run shot in the sixth. That concluded the scoring.
"I thought we pitched pretty well tonight," Forney said. "It was a tough night to pitch. It was windy and it was blowing out and it was dry tonight, the ball was really flying of the bat. I said to myself, âI hope we keep the ball on the ground tonight.' But I thought (Chris) Salamida did a great job tonight. He really settled down after he gave up the home run and we got a great job from the bullpen. Cookie (Aaron Cook) and (Zach) Baldwin are throwing the ball real well right now and I wanted to get Aaron (Hartsock) back on the horse after that tough outing the other night. And Jamie's (Vermilyea) really pitched well tonight. It was a good night."
Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida (8-3, 3.39 ERA) got the win while Gary starter Ryne Reynoso (3-4, 6.60 ERA) suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes will have Thursday off to travel to St. Paul. Friday night, the Fish will meet the Saints at Midway Stadium at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
