Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

EL PASO, Tx.---Shreveport-Bossier erased a five-run deficit with a six-run sixth inning, but El Paso would respond with five runs over their last three innings to beat the Captains 11-8 at Cohen Stadium Tuesday night.

Captains sluggers Palmer Karr Jr. and Mike Provencher both went deep in the sixth as Shreveport-Bossier sent nine men to the plate. Karr finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Provencher was 2-for-4 with three batted in. Catcher Brian Peterson also turned in a 2-for-4 night with two runs and two RBIs, though it proved not to be enough. El Paso's Nelson Teilon and Chad Gabriel each had three hits, while Brian Joynt added three RBIs in the win.

The Diablos got to Captains starter Ryan DiPietro for four runs (two earned) in the third to take an early lead. Maikol Gonzalez walked to start the inning and came home on Teilon's one-out single. The ball was misplayed by Shreveport-Bossier leftfielder Alex Cowart, allowing Gonzalez to score from first. Teilon came home on Javier Brito's RBI double. Brito took third on shortstop John Johnson's throwing error to home, his second error of the game. Gabriel and Joynt would add two-out RBIs to make it 4-0.

DiPietro would go 4.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out three. It was his shortest outing since June 10. The Captains were defeated for the first time in four starts against El Paso this year with DiPietro on the mound. He got the no-decision and remains 3-0 against the Diablos on the year.

With the score 6-1 in the sixth, Johnson led off the inning with a walk and scored on Robert Perry's RBI double. That would knock El Paso starter Colin Allen from the game, having gone five innings and allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five. Karr's ninth homer of the year to left made it 6-4. After Uriak Marquez walked and Peterson scored him with a base hit, Provencher's line drive long ball to left gave the Captains a one-run lead.

However, it wouldn't hold up, as the Diablos took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Brito off Captains reliever Mark Haynez and an RBI fielder's choice by Joynt off Jose Velazquez (L, 0-1). The Diablos would tack on another insurance run in the seventh.

Shreveport-Bossier came to within a run in the eighth when Provencher hit a two-out double scoring Peterson. But in the last of the eighth the Diablos sent eight men to the plate and scored twice. Catcher Alberto Espinosa reached on a leadoff error to Captains third baseman Andres Rodriguez. Espinosa took third on Gabriel's second double of the game and scored on a Joynt sacrifice fly. Gabriel would score on a wild pitch by Hector Carrasco. Carrasco, in his second appearance this year with the Captains, walked one and hit two batters to load the bases, but struck out Teilon to end the inning.

Diablos reliever Kyle Cremers (W, 1-0) allowed just one run in three innings to pick up his first win of the year. He sent the Captains down in order in the ninth to preserve the win.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 35-39 on the season. The Captains still trail Winnipeg in the Wild Card race by 7.5 and are 12 games behind Grand Prairie in the South Division. Wednesday night the Captains throw Josh Strawn (1-0, 3.79) to the hill against the Diablos' Scott Hodson (2-6, 7.16). First pitch is at 7:05 local time, 8:05 in Shreveport-Bossier.
