St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 3, 2011) - Extra inning ballgames are becoming all too commonplace for the St. Paul Saints, playing their third in four games, but this time they came up on the short end losing 6-5 in 11 innings to the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
With the Saints trailing 5-3 in the seventh Adam Frost singled to left and Shane Costa was hit by a pitch. Ole Sheldon hit a hard liner to third that fell in and out of the glove of Trevor Lawhorn, but he was able to force Costa at second. Jason Cooper tied the game, however, when he drilled a triple to left-center. With a man at third and two outs Argelis Nunez struck out and Ronnie Bourquin flew out to end the inning.
The Saints got another great relief appearance from Caleb Thielbar who helped send it into extra innings. Thielbar pitched 3.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out five and extending his franchise best scoreless streak to 24.2 innings.
In the top of the 11th the Saints had a chance to take the lead as Sheldon and Cooper singled with one out. The two moved up on a ground out by Nunez and Bourquin was intentionally walked to load the bases. Richard Mercado, however, grounded out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
That gave the Pheasants the window they needed in the bottom of the inning. With one out Francisco Leandro doubled off of Kyle Foster. With two outs Hunter Jobes was intentionally walked setting the stage for Henry Contreras. He hit a grounder to the left of Bourquin at third and the ball skipped over his glove into left field for the game winning single and ending Foster's scoreless streak at 17.1 innings.
The Saints pounded out 19 hits on the evening including four from Frost and Cooper (who had three RBI) and three from Sheldon and Justin Snyder.
The Saints have a much needed day off on Thursday and welcome in the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Friday evening for a big three game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. The two teams are tied for first in the North Division. The Saints send LHP Donald Brandt (7-2, 3.94) to the mound. It is World Record High 5's presented by High Five Beverages. Fans will have a chance to win up to $77,777 with St. Croix Casino Big Money Days and following the game is Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
