Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, ND- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 10-8 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday night.
The RedHawks overcame a four-run deficit in the win and scored eight of their 10 runs with two outs. The RedHawks had the leadoff hitter on base in seven of their eight team at bats.
With the Wingnuts leading 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Nic Jackson led off with a single to right against Logan Hoch. Hoch was relieved by Matt Nevarez who issued a walk to Kyle Nichols. Jesse Hoorelbeke followed with a double to right-center field that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 8-7. Nevarez nearly escaped the jam, striking out C.J. Retherford and Carlo Cota back-to-back. But after a walk to pinch hitter John Wagle loaded the bases, Todd Jennings singled just over the head of first baseman Jorge Delgado to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs. Kendy Batista relieved Nevarez and allowed an RBI, infield single to Jonathan Wyatt that gave Fargo-Moorhead a 10-8 lead.
Nichols hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first against Wingnuts' starter Derek Blacksher that gave Fargo and early 2-0 lead. Jennings added a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second to make it 3-0.
The Wingnuts rallied for five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Peter Barrows led off with a line drive single to center and took third on Gerardo Bustamante's hit-and-run single through the right side. Jose Duran tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Barrows. After Mike Conroy grounded out to second base, Josh Horn lined a single to right that plated Bustamante with the Wingnuts' second run of the night. Josh Workman flared a single down the right field line to put runners on the corners. Juan Richardson capped off the inning, swinging on a 3-0 count, and crushing a two-out, three-run home run to straightaway center field.
A two-out single from Retherford in the bottom of the third narrowed the lead to 5-4, but the Wingnuts scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to build an 8-4 lead. Conroy singled home Duran from second base with two outs in the fourth, while a wild pitch and RBI groundout accounted for the Wingnuts' runs in the fifth.
Fargo trimmed the lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth on RBI doubles from Hoorelbeke and Cota.
Kevin Fuqua earned the win with four scoreless innings of long relief. Donnie Smith worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save. Matt Nevarez took the loss for the Wingnuts, allowing three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning in the bottom of the seventh.
Blacksher took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits in five innings. Blacksher walked two and struck out four.
Dan Blewett started for Fargo and also took a no-decision, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in four-plus innings. Blewett walked zero and struck out four.
Eight of the Wingnuts' nine starters had at least one hit. Richardson was 4 for 5, while Workman and Delgado each had two hits.
