American Association Game Recaps

August 3, 2011 - American Association (AA) News Release

Wichita 5, Fargo-Moorhead 1

The RedHawks used small ball to manufacture a run in the first. But after the first-inning score, Wichita starting pitcher Ryan Hinson buckled down, striking out seven over the next six frames while allowing only five more hits. And in the fifth, the Wingnuts made Hinson's night worth it, putting two on the board to go on top for good. Wichita C Edwin Bellorin did the honors, singling in 1B Jorge Delgado and DH Josh Workman. Wichita put three insurance runs on the board in the top of the ninth to pave the way for reliever Josh Dew to close out Fargo-Moorhead. Wingnuts 2B Jose Duran matched Bellorin's two RBI, 1-for-3 night for Wichita. RedHawks DH Kyle Nichols led all batters in hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Grand Prairie 5, Amarillo 2

The AirHogs got a two-run homer from SS Jake Taylor in the fourth inning and never trailed in their 5-2 win over Amarillo on Tuesday. The four-bagger was Taylor's only hit of the night batting in the nine hole. Starting Grand Prairie pitcher John Brownell nearly went the distance, allowing two Amarillo runs over eight frames before making way for reliever Jon Hunton in the ninth. Brownell surrendered five hits and four walks while striking out two. AirHogs 2B David Espinosa picked up three of Grand Prairie's eight hits and scored a two-run Joey Gomes single in the first inning. The Sox got two doubles and a run from 2B Lee Cruz, whose season average now stands at an impressive .378.

Sioux Falls 9, St. Paul 6

The Pheasants and Saints went back and forth Tuesday night with Sioux Falls winding up on top thanks in large part to RF Gus Milner. With his Pheasants leading 6-4 in the sixth, Milner cleared the bases on a three-run double, one of his two hits on the night. Those three runs proved to be the winning margin after the Saints put two more on the board in the seventh and eighth innings. For St. Paul, 1B/RF Jason Cooper had a team-high three hits while scoring twice, once on a solo home run in the eighth. Sioux Falls starting pitcher Ben Moore struck out 14 batters in seven innings of work while allowing five runs and picking up his 11th win of the year.

Lincoln 3, Fort Worth 1

Working off of momentum built by starting pitcher John James, a trio of Lincoln relievers threw a perfect seventh, eighth and ninth to close out a 3-1 Saltdogs win. James allowed one run on four hits in six innings of work before handing the game over to Garrett Sherrill to start the seventh. Lincoln went on top early, getting an RBI single from RF Rafael Alvarez in the first. The Cats tied the score at one on a solo homer from CF Ryan Patterson in the fifth. But the Saltdogs answered with one-run frames in both the sixth and seventh, the latter score on a bases-empty homer from 3B Brandon Jones. Jones' and Patterson's dingers were their only hits on the evening.

Sioux City 7, Kansas City 2

The Explorers never trailed Tuesday night, using a four-run fourth to power their way to a 7-2 win over Kansas City. Sioux City took advantage of two doubles, two walks and a hit batsman in the big inning en route to taking a commanding 5-1 lead. C Ray Serrano opened the frame with one of the two doubles, working an 0-2 count even before making solid contact for one of his two hits on the night. It was Serrano's 23rd double of the year. Kansas City's Jim Fasano tied the score at one early on his sixth home run of the year and his only hit on the evening. But that was before the Explorers' impressive fourth frame. Sioux City starting pitcher Jason Jarvis threw seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Gary SouthShore 13, Winnipeg 11

It was a game full of multi-run innings between the RailCats and Goldeyes on Tuesday. Five times, either Gary SouthShore or Winnipeg put up at least three scores in a single frame. The RailCats had the biggest of them all - a six-run third - and went on to win, 13-11. The first three runs in the third inning came via a Cristian Guerrero homer, one of the right fielder's three hits. Guerrero's counterpart in the Winnipeg outfield, Kody Kaiser, also hit a three-run bomb, bringing his team to within two runs in the bottom of the eighth. But it was the last run-producing hit of the night for the Goldeyes. Kaiser went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. RailCats SS Kyle Haines and 1B Mike Rohde each had a game-high four hits. Haines scored three runs while Rohde crossed home place four times and batted in two runs.

El Paso 11, Shreveport-Bossier 8

The Diablos fell behind briefly in the sixth inning, but led most of the way and defeated the Captains, 11-8. Shreveport-Bossier's short lead occurred after a six-run sixth. Three of the runs came after the second out of the frame. Diablos LF Chad Gabriel scored three times and batted in a run while having a game-high three hits in four at-bats. Gabriel's teammate, DH Nelson Teilon also had three hits, going 3-for-6 with a run scored. Shreveport-Bossier 2B Mike Provencher hit his sixth home run of the year in the Captains' six-run inning and went 2-for-4 to co-lead his club in hits. El Paso took advantage of two errors and five hits, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the third and led 6-1 before the big Captains sixth.
