Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, INDIANA - The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is partnering with the professional baseball team, Gary SouthShore RailCats, to offer a special deal on tickets and refreshments for foster families. Saturday, August 13 has been designated Foster Families Night for the RailCats/Shreveport-Bossier Captains game at U. S. Steel Yard in downtown Gary. Indiana licensed foster parents may purchase a box or reserved seat ticket (best available) and enjoy a hot dog, bag of chips, cookie and a soft drink all for only $10. This special pricing is available to foster parents and their foster and biological children under 21 living in the home.
"We are pleased to join forces with the Gary RailCats to offer this special deal to those families who work tirelessly to help us protect the children and families we serve," said James W. Payne, DCS Director. "It is collaboration like this that allows us to provide children in our care, as well as our foster families, the chance to enjoy a special night out they might not otherwise take part in as a result of these difficult economic times. We thank the RailCats for their support of these children and families and their generosity in creating this wonderful night at the ballpark."
Foster Family Night at the RailCats game is one of many events, activities or opportunities across Indiana available to show appreciation to the over 5,900 licensed foster families that care for the nearly 9,600 Indiana children currently in foster care. One such opportunity is the free one-year membership to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis for licensed foster parents and their families. The free membership allows foster families to enjoy all the wonders of the world's largest children's museum as many times as they like for an entire year. Additional ways to say "thanks" to Indiana's foster parents, like Foster Family Nights at other professional baseball games in Indiana, are also in the works.
"The RailCats are proud to partner with the Indiana Department of Child Services to offer foster families this great opportunity," noted Radley Robinson, RailCats' Community Relations Manager. "We strive to create a fun and family-oriented environment here at U. S. Steel Yard and know that this mirrors the goals of DCS. This mutually beneficial relationship is just one step in building a stronger Indiana. With a great ticket and food voucher combo, families with foster children that may not have been inclined to come to a game can do so and not worry about over-stretching their budgets."
To help RailCats fans understand the need for foster parents and the challenges foster children face, the RailCats will also make an area in the concourse section available to DCS. Local DCS staff will be passing out informational brochures and be available to answer questions throughout the game. In addition, a lucky foster child will be given the honor of throwing out the first pitch.
