Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Gary SouthShore RailCats outlasted the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday, amassing 18 hits in a 13-11 slugfest victory.

The Goldeyes plated four runs in the bottom of the first against RailCat starter Nolan Nicholson to grab the early 4-0 edge. Jon Weber, Luis Alen, Lou Ott, and Justin Bass connected on four consecutive RBI singles, all coming after a two-out walk as the Goldeyes batted around.

Not to be outdone, the RailCats sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the third, matching the most runs scored in a frame this year by scoring six times to chase Winnipeg starter Mike Williams from the game and jump in front 6-4. Mike Massaro doubled with one out and Brad Boyer followed by being hit by a pitch. Cristian Guerrero ignited the rally with one swing, a three-run homer over the wall in right for his ninth longball of the year. Brian Kolb and Kyle Haines both singled before Mike Rohde put the 'Cats in front for the second consecutive single with a two-run single up the middle. Rohde stole second and Craig Maddox finished off the inning with an RBI single as well. Williams pitched just 2.1 innings in his fifth start.

Winnipeg retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to go up 8-6. Ott hurt his former teammates with a double to score a run while Bass lifted a sacrifice fly and Justin Justice an RBI single. Nicholson lasted just three innings in his return to the rotation.

The RailCats began to chip away at the deficit in the top of the fifth without a hit. Rohde and Maddox walked to lead off the frame before Carrara dropped down a bunt but reached safely on an error. Adam Klein pulled the RailCats within a run on an RBI fielder's choice. The club took the lead again with a pair of runs in the sixth, all coming after there were two outs. Haines and Rohde singled before Maddox reached on a fielder's choice. Carrara knocked a two-run single through the left side with two strikes to hand the RailCats a 9-8 lead.

For the second time in the game the RailCats batted around in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs to extend the margin to 13-8. Haines and Rohde collected singles to start the inning and both were moved up on a sacrifice. A wild pitch scored a run before Carrara walked. Massaro knocked home two with a single and Guerrero added an RBI single later in the inning. Winnipeg's Kody Kaiser hit a three-run homer in the eighth to whittle the lead down to 13-11, but James Baker spun a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save.

The RailCats (45-30) matched a season high for runs in the longest nine-inning game of the year, a 3:47 tilt. Will Krout tossed three perfect frames in the middle innings, striking out three to earn his fourth win of the year. Guerrero knocked home four to set a new career high for RBIs with 67, now tied with Steve Haake for the second most in single season history. Every member of the lineup banged out at least one hit. Rohde and Haines blasted four each with Rohde scoring four runs to equal a franchise mark.

The RailCats made a roster move before the game, releasing RHP Jack Frawley, who started 15 games this year and was 3-5 with a 6.05 ERA. Frawley was on the disabled list.

The series concludes tomorrow night with a 7:00 p.m. contest. The RailCats will start RHP Ryne Reynoso (3-3, 5.58) against the third consecutive lefty for Winnipeg, LHP Chris Salamida (7-3, 3.32).

Steel Yard including post-game fireworks, postgame music in the Diamond Club, and Greek Night and a Negro League Celebration. For tickets call (219) 882-2255 or visit railcatsbaseball.com.
