Orlando Solar Bears News Release
Orlando, FL - The Solar Bears skated to a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of action, but a third period comeback by the Florida Everblades sank the Solar Bears to a 4-2 loss in front of 8,849 fans at the Amway Center on Saturday night.
The Solar Bears took an early lead, when F Zach Harrison deflected a shot from DZachary Yuen at 8:19 of the frame. It was the only goal of a hotly contested first period, as the Solar Bears took the advantage into the second period.
A quick start to the second stanza helped Orlando increase their advantage. A tic-tac-toe breakout led F Mike Ullrich into the zone and he centered a pass to D Cody Wild for a backhand one-timer that slid under the pad of Kristers Gudlevskis just 1:49 into the period. Orlando rang a shot off the post a few minutes later, but the period would end with the Solar Bears continuing to lead 2-0.
The third period saw the Everblades mount a comeback. Just 2:32 into the third, F Mike Merrifield deflected a shot from the blue line to get the Everblades on the board, and then 27 seconds later F Matthew Pistilli stole a puck as he left the penalty box, cruised in on a breakaway, and notched the game-tying marker. The score stayed tied 2-2 until late in the frame, when Florida F Brandon MacLean stole a puck on a faceoff and picked the top right corner of the net to give Florida a lead they would not relinquish. Pistilli picked up his second goal of the period on an empty net for the game's final 4-2 score.
