Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Gwinnett, GA: Greenville picked up another road win to start the season with a 3-1 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday night.
Just 1:29 in, Jordie Johnston picked up a loose puck in the slot for the first goal of the game. Bretton Cameron and Andrew Rowe were responsible for giving Johnston time in the slot but it was credited as an unassisted goal. Later in the period, Ryan Hegarty took a boarding hit which Brad Cole took exception to. Cole and Jeremie Malouin were issued five minutes for fighting but an extra two minute penalty was given to Malouin for boarding. On the power play, Lee Baldwin blew a slap shot by Gladiators goaltender Chris Rawlings for a 2-0 lead. Michael St. Criox and Elgin Pearce collected the assists on the goal.
The second period was scoreless for the first half with neither team able to capitalize on a scoring chance. Kurtis Bartliff put the Gladiators on the board with 9:10 left in the second frame. His wrist shot beat Connor Knapp high blocker to bring the score to a 2-1 Greenville lead. Gwinnett took the momentum which lead to a few other scoring chances but none converted. Johnston snapped a quick wrist shot past Rawlings for his second of the game to halt Gwinnett's momentum and bring the Road Warriors' lead back to two. Greenville took a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
This score remained the same throughout the third as Knapp closed the door on several Gladiators' opportunities. The Road Warriors' netminder saved 20 shots in route to his first victory this season. Rawlings, the game's third star, took the loss with 30 saves. St. Criox was again, the game's second star. He tallied two assists in the game. Johnston was the game's first star.
