Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Evansville, IN - Led by a 25-save performance by Mike Clemente (1-0-0-0), the Evansville IceMen defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 2-0 Saturday night at the Ford Center.
All the scoring Clemente and the IceMen would need came in the opening period. Early in the game, a pair of penalties against Kalamazoo put the K-Wings on their heels, which gave Evansville the chance to connect on their second power-play opportunity of the night when Nathan Moon (1st) knocked in a Joe Lavin rebound 4:39 into the contest.
After Kalamazoo squandered two power-play attempts midway in the period, a turnover at the IceMen blue line would turn into a breakaway for Evansville. While the initial opportunity from Peter Sakaris was denied by Joel Martin, Mike Seidel would put in the rebound to push the IceMen's lead to two goals.
Despite physical play in the remaining two periods that gave plenty of scoring chances for both teams, neither team was able to light the lamp. The K-Wings closest opportunity occurred with 3:05 remaining in regulation with a shot from David Pacan hit the crossbar and bounced away from the net.
Martin (0-1-0-0) finished the game with 25 saves in the loss.
The defeat marked the first time in their ECHL history (4-1-0-0) that the K-Wings have dropped their season opener.
Including preseason, the K-Wings have now been shutout in back-to-back games, both of which were on the road.
K-Wings will drop the puck for their home opener on Saturday, October 26th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the IceMen during the 10th Annual Orange Ice Game presented by Meijer and WZUU (92.5 FM).
