Third Period Brawl Turns Tide In Steelheads 5-2 Loss To Aces

Boise, ID - Two, third period power play goals by the visiting Alaska Aces helped send the Steelheads to a 5-2 defeat in front of 3,743 fans at Qwest Arena on Wednesday night.
The Aces netted the game's first goal, and the only goal of the first period, on a point shot by Corbin Schmidt at 7:51. While on the power play, the Aces worked the puck back to Schmidt who forced a shot through traffic that glanced off a body in front and past Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (28 saves). Olivier Filion and Mike Scott drew the helpers on Schmidt's seventh of the year.
The Steelheads (35-24-2-3) have now lost three of their last four home contests, and five of the last seven games overall, while the Aces (46-14-2-3) snap their two-game winless streak.
At the 7:10 mark of the second period, Schmidt buried his second of the night, getting to a loose puck at the side of the Steelheads' crease and flipping the puck into the top shelf for his first two-goal effort of the year. Again, Scott and Filion got the assists.
Just 26 seconds later the Steelheads answered with Derek Nesbitt's 26th of the season. Steelheads' captain Marty Flichel slipped a pass off to Nesbitt at the right circles, who blasted a one-timer behind Aces' goaltender Derek Gustafson (19 saves) and just inside the left post to cut the deficit in half. The even-strength tally helped extend Nesbitt's scoring streak to six games.
Two minutes after Nesbitt's marker, Blake Forsyth followed up Scott Burt's shot by smacking the puck over Gustafson for his third of the season. B.J. Crombeen snagged the other assist on Forsyth's second of the year against the Aces and his first goal on home ice.
After two periods, the game was tied at two and the shots were 21-15 in favor of the Aces.
Midway through the third period with the game still tied, the Aces went on a five-on-three advantage for five minutes, and seven-minute power play overall, after Jeremy Yablonski and Matt Nickerson were handed major penalties for fighting, game misconducts and match misconducts. On the advantages, the Aces tallied twice, with Justin Bourne and Filion tallying at 8:33 and 10:52, respectively. Bourne's first professional goal turned out to be the game-winner, as Aces' defenseman Steven Later added an unassisted, empty-net goal with 29 seconds left in regulation to round out the scoring.
The final shots favored the Aces at 33-21, as the Steelheads went zero-for-three on the power play and three-for-six on the penalty kill.
