Atherton, Smolenak assigned from Springfield

Johnstown, PA (March 21, 2007) - The Johnstown Chiefs today announced that defenseman P.J. Atherton and forward Radek Smolenak have been reassigned from the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, the 24 year-old Atherton won a National Championship with Minnesota in 2003, and began his professional career in 2005-06, appearing in nine games with Springfield and scoring a goal and three assists after completing his collegiate career with the Golden Gophers. In 2006-07, Atherton has appeared in 49 games with Johnstown, scoring four goals and 22 assists for 26 points, and also played in seven games with Springfield, scoring one goal and one assist.

Born in Prague, Czech Republic, Smolenak played two seasons for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League before turning professional this season. In 32 games with Johnstown this season, the 20 year-old Smolenak has scored 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points, and has also appeared in 20 games with Springfield, earning one assist.
