Worcester Red Sox News Release
On April 23, 2022, the Worcester Red Sox officially cut the ribbon on the WooSox Foundation Care-A-Van, presented by Bank of America. To honor this anniversary, on Earth Day on April 22, 2023, the WooSox Foundation stopped at two of Working for Worcester's "Build Day" sites, and at Net of Compassion's "Meals on Main."
The Care-A-Van and the Foundation team made their first stop of the day at Abby's House, where the team met up with Working for Worcester volunteers to landscape, lay rocks, and add a new sign to the house. Abby's House is a Worcester-based nonprofit that provides shelter for women and children. The Care-A-Van then traveled to City View School in Worcester, where volunteers worked on a variety of tasks, from assembling structures to painting. The WooSox team also provided Polar water to the Working for Worcester build sites, and thanked volunteers with complimentary WooSox tickets for upcoming games at Polar Park.
Made possible by a generous contribution from Bank of America, the Care-A-Van brings resources to communities who otherwise may not have easy access to Polar Park. The vehicle has allowed the WooSox Foundation to extend its reach far beyond the diamond, and it has been embraced by the Worcester community and across Central Massachusetts.
After lending a hand to Working for Worcester, the Care-A-Van drove to Net of Compassion at 674 Main Street, just a few blocks from Polar Park. Here, Foundation volunteers teamed up with Pastor Richard Gonzalez, Director and Founder of the organization, to provide a free meal and hygiene kits to over 150 members of Worcester's Main South community. The hygiene kits contained everyday essentials, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, hairbrushes, underwear, and more. The WooSox also provided reusable water bottles, and the opportunity to get a free haircut.
The Care-A-Van not only came staffed with WooSox Foundation volunteers, but also professional barbers from Klippers and a Dream, located on Lake Avenue, and Recaldes Barbershop, located on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. Three barbers dedicated their afternoon to giving back to their community by plugging in to the Care-A-Van and giving a complimentary haircut to anyone who wanted one.
Thanks to Bank of America, the Care-A-Van is fully equipped with a shower, toilet, and kitchen, along with plenty of storage space stocked with everything from baseball equipment to blankets.
The WooSox Foundation will continue to use the mobility of the Care-A-Van to bring resources out into the community, rather than expecting the community to come to Polar Park. Together with Bank of America, the Foundation will meet the community where they are and shed light on areas of need.
