Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has been talking about a lack of "timely hitting" all season long. On Monday night, his team failed to deliver again.

The Goldeyes were held to two runs on 10 hits by five Gary SouthShore RailCats' pitchers, as Gary scored one in the first, two in the third, one in the fifth and three in the ninth and whipped Winnipeg 7-2.

With 5,477 spectators looking on at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes got five runners into scoring position in the final five innings, but couldn't bring any of them home and Winnipeg fell to the RailCats for the third straight night.

With the loss, Winnipeg dropped to 24-24 on the season and remained in third place in the American Association's North Division.

Gary opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Winnipeg tied it in the bottom half of the second on a solo homer by Fehlandt Lentini.

Gary scored two in the third off Goldeyes starter Pete Gehle and then added another in the top of the fifth before Winnipeg scored on an infield single by Luis Alen, a single by Tyler Graham, a walk to Mike Coles and a balk by Gary starter Morgan Coombs.

And that was it. Gary added three runs in the ninth. Winnipeg made two errors in the ninth and finished with four miscues on the night.

Four Goldeyes had two-hit games: Graham, Alen, Josh Mazzola (who also picked up the 100th double of his pro career) and Ryan Scoma.

Coombs (4-1, 4.85 ERA) got the win while Gehle (3-2, 3.98 ERA) took the loss. Gehle allowed four runs on six hits over only 4.2 innings. There was no save.

The two teams will meet in the final game of this four-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Shaw Park. Lefty Mark Hardy (5-2, 3.27 ERA) will start for Winnipeg while Will Krout (1-4, 5.29 ERA) will head to the bump for Gary.

Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
