Wingnuts Grind out Fifth Straight Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (33-18) beat the Amarillo Sox (29-21) 8-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Wingnuts scored seven unanswered runs to overcome a four-run deficit and win their fifth game in a row.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Khoury opened the inning with a triple off the bottom of the wall down the left field line. After Jake Kahaulelio was hit by a pitch, Kristhiam Linares relieved Sox' starter Joe Newby. John Rodriguez cut the lead to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly to left field that was caught in foul territory. After C.J. Ziegler walked, Josh Giles relieved Linares. Brent Clevlen doubled down the right field line to score Kahaulelio. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Abel Nieves was intentionally walked to load the bases. Wichita tied the game when Cole Armstrong was hit by a pitch, and took their first lead on a sacrifice fly to center from Colt Loehrs.

Khoury bunted for a hit leading off the bottom of the eighth. Kahaulelio followed with a line drive, two-run home run to left-center that provided the Wingnuts with two insurance runs.

Josh Dew closed out the game with a scoreless top of the ninth to earn his ninth save of the year.

Nick Walters earned the win in relief, striking out three in one and one-third scoreless relief innings.

Giles took the loss for Amarillo.

Josh Stone and Andrew Aizenstadt also had scoreless relief appearances. Wichita's bullpen totaled four shutout innings for a second straight game.

The Sox took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second against Wingnuts' starter Anthony Capra. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Austin Gallagher drew a bases loaded walk to force home the game's first run. K.C. Serna added a sacrifice fly to left field later in the inning.

Armstrong singled home Clevlen on a line drive to center in the bottom of the second to cut Amarillo's lead in half.

Adam De La Garza singled leading off the top of the third, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on consecutive groundballs from Chris Valencia and Joe Weik to make it 3-1 Sox.

Serna led off the fifth with a double and scored on Jason Martin's bunt single that resulted in a throwing error. Martin took second on the same play and eventually scored on a Valencia groundout.

Clevlen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Wingnuts within three runs.

Capra took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in five innings. Capra walked four and struck out four.

Newby also took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on four hits in six-plus innings. Newby walked four and struck out four.
