Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa has been activated from the disabled list. Tazawa will start game one of the Sea dogs' doubleheader tonight at 6:00 PM at against the New Britain Rock Cats at Hadlock Field. Left-handed pitcher Kason Gabbard was placed on the disabled list.
Tazawa, who has been selected to both the MLB Futures Game and the Eastern League All-Star Game, has been sidelined since June 20th. The 22 year-old, has posted a 7-4 record with a 2.92 ERA (26 ER/ 71 IP), which ranks ninth in the league in 14 starts for the Sea Dogs in 2009. His seven wins are tied for third in the Eastern League and his 71 strikeouts are tied for fourth in the league. Tazawa was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent on December 11, 2008. He joined the Red Sox organization after a four-year amateur career with the Nippon Oil ENEOS of the Japan Industrial League. Tazawa posted a 13-1 record with five saves and 0.80 ERA (10 ER/ 113 IP) in 21 games (11 starts) in 2008. The Yokohama, Japan native is rated by Baseball America as the seventh ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization.
Gabbard has made three starts for the Sea Dogs this season posting a 0-3 record with a 19.64 ERA (16 ER/ 7.1 IP). Gabbard ranks fifth in Sea Dogs franchise history with 21 career wins in 57 career appearances. His .818 winning percentage (9-2 record) in 2006 is tied for the single season franchise record with four others. The lefty was traded back to Boston from Texas on April 29th of this year for cash considerations. Gabbard was pitching at Triple-A Oklahoma City where he appeared in five games for the RedHawks, going 0-1, 10.50 ERA (7 ER/6 IP). The Florida native went 9-7, 4.53 ERA in parts of four seasons in the Major Leagues with Texas and Boston. He was traded to the Rangers on July 31, 2007 with outfielder David Murphy and outfielder Engel Beltre for right-handed pitcher Eric Gagne and cash considerations.
The Portland Sea Dogs continue their homestand tonight with a doubleheader at 6:00 PM against the New Britain Rock Cats. The homestand concludes on Friday, July 3rd with a post-game fireworks show.
