Five SeaWolves Named Eastern League All-Stars

(Erie, PA) - The Eastern League today has announced the rosters for the 2009 Eastern League All-Star Game. Five Erie SeaWolves were selected to the annual game including outfielders Deik Scram and Brennan Boesch, first baseman Ryan Strieby, catcher Alex Avila and right-handed relief pitcher Josh Rainwater. Both Scram and Rainwater were unanimous fan ballot selections.

BRENNAN BOESH

Outfielder Brennan Boesch has put together an impressive first half of the season, especially in the power department. He leads the ‘Wolves with 15 home runs (Career-high and second in the EL), 51 RBI, 73 hits and is tied for the team lead with four triples while hitting .250 in 74 games. He is third on the team with a .486 slugging percentage and is tied for second in the league with 35 extra-base hits. This is Boesch's second all-star selection. He was a New York-Penn League all-star while playing with Oneonta in 2006. Boesch was the Tigers third round selection in the June 2006 draft out of the University of California-Berkeley.

RYAN STRIEBY

The Tigers 2008 Minor League Player of the Year, Ryan Strieby got off to a fast start in 2009 and despite battling a nagging wrist injury, has put up solid numbers in the first half and earns his third all-star selection. Strieby was a Midwest League All-Star with West Michigan in 2007 and a Florida State League all-star with Lakeland in 2008. He entered the season rated as the best power hitter in the Tigers organization according to Baseball America. BBAM has also tabbed Strieby as the 12th best prospect in the Tigers organization. He is second on the ‘Wolves with 14 home runs (tied for third in the EL), 46 RBI and tied for second with 63 hits while hitting .293 in 64 games. He leads the SeaWolves with 42 walks, a .419 on-base percentage (second in the EL) and a .553 slugging percentage (fourth in the EL). Strieby is the top defensive first baseman in the Eastern League with a .996 fielding percentage. Strieby was the Tigers fourth round selection in the 2006 June draft out of the University of Kentucky

ALEX AVILA

Alex Avila is in his first full professional season and earns his first all-star selection. He entered the season rated by Baseball America as the 20th-best prospect in the Tigers organization. He owns a .289 batting average with six home runs and 35 RBI in 63 games and leads the SeaWolves with 19 doubles and is tied for second with 34 walks and 63 hits. His .995 fielding percentage ranks him among the top catchers in the Eastern League. He currently ranks third in the EL at throwing out potential base stealers at a clip of 45.2 percent (28 CS/62 ATT). Avila was selected by the Tigers in the fifth round of the June 2008 draft out of the University of Alabama and was a non-roster invitee to Major League spring training in 2009.

DEIK SCRAM

Outfielder Deik Scram was the unanimous SeaWolves Fan Selection for a position player and earns his second all-star selection. Scram was a Midwest League All-Star with West Michigan in 2007. Scram, in his second season with the ‘Wolves, is hitting .274 with 10 home runs (three shy of career-high 13 set in 2008) and 38 RBI and is tied for second with 34 walks and 63 hits in 65 games. He is also tied for the team lead with six stolen bases and ranks second on the club with a .496 slugging percentage. Scram was selected by the Tigers in the 18th round of the June 2006 draft out of Oklahoma State University.

JOSH RAINWTER

Right-handed relief pitcher Josh Rainwater was the unanimous SeaWolves Fan Selection for a pitcher and earns his first all-star selection. Rainwater was named Erie's Pitcher of the Year and tied for eighth all-time in SeaWolves history with 10 wins in 2008 in 24 appearances, 23 starts. Rainwater has been one of the most reliable relievers in 2009 for the Howlers, He is tied for second on the team with 22 appearances and has compiled a 2-1 record with two saves and a 2.59 ERA (second-best ERA on the team). Rainwater has allowed 15 runs, 12 earned on 33 hits with 14 walks and 32 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work. His .219 batting average against ranks second among SeaWolves relievers. Rainwater was the Tigers fourth round selection of the June 2003 draft out of Deridder High School (LA).

2009 EASTERN LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME

The 2009 Eastern League All-Star game will be held at Trenton's Waterfront Park on July 15, 2009.
