
No Fun to Start July, \'Dogs Swept by Rock Cats in Twinbill

(Portland, ME) - The New Britain Rock Cats (41-36) swept a
doubleheader from the Portland Sea Dogs (36-41) by 3-1 scores on
Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. New Britain clinches the series
victory by taking the first three games - Portland has dropped eight
straight games at Hadlock Field.
In the opener, the Rocks scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning
off RHP Junichi Tazawa (7-5) to beat Portland 3-1. Tazawa took the
loss, yielding six hits, three runs (one earned), no walks and six
strikeouts over 5 IP. RHP Frank Mata made his second professional
start in 224 outings and allowed two hits and one run over 3.2 IP.
LHP Jose Lugo (4-2) tossed 2.1 scoreless frames to earn the win in
relief. RHP Anthony Slama pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn
his 16th save of the season.
CF Brandon Roberts (1-for-4) gave New Britain a 1-0 lead with a
run-scoring double in the third inning. DH Erik Lis (1-for-3) led off
the fourth inning with a double off the right-field wall and scored on
3B Juan Portes' fielder's choice. Lis was safe at the plate when C
John Otness dropped SS Argenis Diaz's throw to the plate. Otness was
charged with an error, leading to 2 unearned runs. C Allan De San
Miguel (1-for-2, RBI) drove in New Britain's final run with a
bloop-single to left field. DH Jon Still (1-for-3, RBI, 2B) accounted
for Portland's lone run with a RBI double down the left-field line to
score Diaz.
In game two, DH Whitt Robbins (1-for-3, 2 RBI) ignited the scoring
with a first inning, two-out, 2-run single off losing pitcher RHP Ryne
Lawson (1-7). The Rock Cats added a third 2-out run in the seventh
inning on SS Yancarlos Ortiz's (1-for-3, RBI, 2B) run-scoring double
down the left-field line. Lawson notched his first career complete
game, yielding three runs on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
RHP Kyle Waldrop (1-0) relieved spot starter RHP Yohan Pino (4 IP, 5
H, R, ER, BB, 6 SO) and earned the win for New Britain. Waldrop was
aided by some great defensive plays late in the game, giving up only 1
hit in 2.2 scoreless frames. RHP Alex Burnett entered the game with
two outs in the seventh inning and retired CF Josh Reddick (1-for-4)
on ground out to first base to end the game.
Portland scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Still,
Anderson and Kalish began the frame with singles of Pino. RF Reid
Engel picked up his 18th RBI of the season with a fly out to left
field.
The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats resume their 5-game series on Thursday
night from Hadlock Field beginning at 7:00 PM. RHP Adam Mills (3-5,
5.75) makes the starter for Portland against New Britain RHP Cole
